THE STORY

The story behind this place

A street stall begun after military service and carried through the years

妙口 opened in 1973. After completing military service, owner Luo started a snack business in Dadaocheng. Pork buns and Four-Herb Soup became the two dishes he kept making through the years, with the arcade of Chang Hwa Bank becoming the stall's familiar home. Today, the steam rising from the baskets and the busy movements beside the soup pot still carry that long, focused rhythm.

The dough is fluffy and springy, absorbing meat juices without turning soggy. The firm pork filling is mixed with diced onion for savory sweetness and a little crunch, while black pepper lifts the aroma.

A TASTE OF TAIWAN

Four-Herb Soup linked to Dihua Street's herbal shops

Dihua Street's herbal-medicine trade once found its way into 妙口's soup pot: the shop has experience buying herbs from local old businesses for its broth. A bun and a bowl of soup therefore offer not only onion sweetness but also a way to taste how the neighborhood's commerce and everyday food connect.

✨ AI visit note

妙口四神湯肉包 sits around Minsheng West Road and Dihua Street in Taipei's Datong District, roughly a ten- to fifteen-minute walk from Beimen or Daqiaotou Station. This decades-old arcade snack stall in Dadaocheng has always focused on Pork Bun and Four-Herb Soup. Steam from the baskets, the aroma of buns, and herbal broth are its clearest signatures. It is an easy hot-food stop while walking Dihua Street, especially for fans of old-school Taiwanese buns and mellow soup.

Stall atmosphere:There is no conventional indoor dining room. The stall operates under the arcade in front of Chang Hwa Bank, where large stainless-steel steamers can be seen releasing clouds of steam from a distance. On one side, staff open the baskets and pack plump white buns; on the other, they keep stirring a large pot of Four-Herb Soup and ladle intestine, Job's tears, and lotus seeds into bowls. Only a few simple tables and chairs are available, while queues stretch along the arcade. The pace is busy and direct, preserving the everyday feel of an old Dadaocheng stall.
Location and dining notes:The address is 台北市大同區民生西路388號, under the Chang Hwa Bank arcade near the intersection of Minsheng West Road and Dihua Street. There is no especially prominent shop sign, so look for the steamers and queue. It is about a ten- to fifteen-minute walk from Beimen or Daqiaotou Station, and buses also stop near Dihua Street or the Minsheng West Road intersection. Seating is limited and customers queue in order; many simply take their food away.
Pork Bun

The Pork Bun is plump and substantial in the hand, with pale ivory dough and the natural texture of fermentation. The first bite is fluffy and springy, and the dough stays intact even after absorbing filling juices. The pork filling is firm rather than loose, mixed with plenty of diced onion. Fat and onion sweetness come together, with occasional crunch, while black pepper sharpens the aroma. The pork flavor is full without feeling greasy.

Four-Herb Soup

The Four-Herb Soup is not the usual milky white but a deeper amber-lotus-root shade, with herbal fragrance and a faint rice-wine note. The broth is simmered for a long time with Chinese herbs such as angelica and chuanxiong, giving it a mellow sweetness and body. Pork intestine, Job's tears, and lotus seeds fill the bowl; the intestine is tender with a little bounce, while the grains and seeds are soft and creamy. You can request it with or without rice wine, and it pairs especially well with the Pork Bun.

Uncle's line: An old stall does not need a long list of choices. One hot Pork Bun and one bowl of Four-Herb Soup are enough for dough aroma, meat, and herbs to take care of your appetite.
💡 Ordering note

For a first visit, Pork Bun with Four-Herb Soup gives the clearest picture of the stall. Bite into the bun first to notice the dough, onion, and black-pepper pork filling, then sip the mellow broth. The soup can be made with or without rice wine; just say so when ordering. Seating under the arcade is limited. If the queue is long or you want to keep walking Dihua Street, taking a bun to go is the simplest option.

  • Recommended:Pork Bun, Four-Herb Soup.
  • Highlights:A decades-old business focused on two dishes, with large steamers and an herbal soup pot working in full view.
  • Best for:A meal during a Dihua Street walk, fans of old-school buns, and people who like herbal soups.

📌 Editor's summary

妙口四神湯肉包 condenses the appeal of an old Dadaocheng stall into two foods. The Pork Bun has fluffy, springy dough around pork, onion, and black pepper; Four-Herb Soup stands out with its dark amber broth, herbal aroma, and light rice-wine note, plus tender intestine and soft Job's tears and lotus seeds. There is no polished décor under the arcade—just constant steam, staff packing orders, and waiting customers—and that is exactly what creates the familiar old-city street-food scene. Coming from Beimen or Daqiaotou Station, a bun and a bowl of soup make a simple, fitting break while exploring Dihua Street.
