THE STORY

The story behind this place

1970 SINCE

A life of migration written into the name 四海一家

After founder Wang Jianying moved to Taiwan from mainland China, he worked as a chef in a Chinese restaurant in Sweden. On returning, he opened a northern Chinese restaurant in 1970. His many moves became the background for the name “四海一家.”

The second generation, Wang Zilian, took over in 1980. The menu kept its northern pastries and pickled-cabbage pork hot pot roots while gradually adding Sichuan, Taiwanese, and home-style stir-fries, allowing the old restaurant to move with Taipei’s changing tastes.

A northern Chinese restaurant that grew into north-and-south cooking in Taipei

METROBITES LOCAL TIP
Share the Scallion Pancake as soon as it arrives

Scallion Pancake is crisp outside and chewy within while hot, but firms as it cools. A group of four to six can share Salt-Baked Chicken and Scallion Pancake first, then choose a meat, fish, or tofu dish according to the table’s tastes.

✨ AI Quick Take

《四海一家》 has operated in Songshan since 1970, building its reputation on northern Chinese shared dishes, wheat pastries, and big round tables. Cooks roll and fry pastries to order, while the menu ranges from Salt-Baked Chicken and Scallion Pancake to salt-and-pepper ribs and Stir-Fried Stinky Tofu, in portions designed for the whole table. For a family meal or dinner with friends, a half-century restaurant is far more dependable than an influencer wall.

Uncle’s line: Some restaurants serve atmosphere; others serve years. A table clearing every plate shows more affection than taking ten group photos.

四海一家 has lasted since 1970 not by changing its decor every couple of years, but by linking everyone’s appetite with northern pastries, cold dishes, stir-fries, and hot pots. You can watch cooks roll dough and fry pancakes near the entrance—the live craft is an old restaurant’s confidence. Portions are not shy; small groups ordering a full table usually leave with more takeaway bags than personal bags.

Setting and dining atmosphere:The restaurant is divided into several dining areas, mainly with round tables for 6 to 8 and other group seating. Private rooms can be requested in advance. Families and groups fill lunch and dinner peaks, creating a lively room and brisk serving pace. Banquet-table and à la carte reservations currently work differently: call ahead for a set table, while à la carte diners should arrive early.

Location and dining notes:The address is 台北市松山區八德路四段72巷10弄16號1樓; you can also enter from the lane opposite Bade Road Section Four, Lane 36. It is about an 11- to 12-minute walk from 國父紀念館站 or 南京三民站, with paid parking about a 1- to 2-minute walk away. Northern dishes run large, making groups of four or more easier to order for. Confirm private rooms, banquet menus, and service charges when booking.
● Salt-Baked Chicken

Salt-Baked Chicken is prepared as an easy-to-eat boneless cold plate. The meat is tender, the skin retains savory fat, and the salt does not cover the chicken’s natural sweetness. It can settle the stomach before hot dishes arrive and save space for bolder ribs and stinky tofu. Anyone who rushes to clear it as soon as it lands will soon feel the whole table staring.

● Scallion Pancake

A northern restaurant cannot hide its pastry fundamentals. This Scallion Pancake is fried lightly crisp and fragrant outside, with wheat aroma, chew, and a real dose of scallion inside. Share it hot; it naturally hardens as it cools. Uncle recommends claiming a piece first—politeness usually leaves only a sheen of oil at the bottom of the plate.

● Salt-and-Pepper Ribs

The ribs have a crisp exterior evenly coated with pepper salt and spices, while the meat stays tender with some bite. They are a classic destroyer of steamed rice and a bold dish to pick at while talking. If someone says they are not hungry, watch how quickly they reach for the ribs; chopsticks are usually more honest than mouths.

● Sweet-and-Sour Fish Fillets

The fish is tender and coated in a balanced sweet-and-sour sauce that never turns into mere syrup. It resets the palate among savory dishes and has broad appeal. With older relatives or children at the table, boneless fish with a clear sweet-sour profile is often the first plate emptied.

● Shrimp and Scrambled Eggs

There is a noticeable amount of shrimp paired with silky scrambled eggs, and the overall seasoning is lighter. Springy shrimp contrasts with soft egg; it looks home-style but demands careful heat control. After pepper-salt and thickened dishes, returning for a bite lets the palate breathe.

● Stir-Fried Stinky Tofu

Stinky tofu cubes are stir-braised with scallion segments, minced meat, and savory sauce. The tofu absorbs the liquid, and both fermented aroma and thickened texture are unmistakable. Fans will use it on half a bowl of rice; those unaccustomed to fermentation may sit farther away. No democratic vote is needed—let the enthusiasts concentrate their efforts.

💡 Ordering note

A group of four to six can begin with Salt-Baked Chicken and Scallion Pancake, then choose among ribs, fish, scrambled eggs, and stinky tofu by preference. Call ahead about banquet menus and private rooms; à la carte diners can avoid peak hours so everyone keeps their temper.

  • Location:台北市松山區八德路四段72巷10弄16號1樓, about an 11- to 12-minute walk from the two metro stations.
  • Type:Northern Chinese shared dishes, wheat pastries, banquet menus, and group dining.
  • Highlights:Founded in 1970, with freshly made northern pastries, round-table dining, and generous dishes.
  • Good for:Family meals, gatherings with friends, company banquets, and diners who enjoy longstanding northern Chinese cooking.

📌 Editor’s wrap-up

《四海一家》 has lasted since 1970 because a single table offers every generation somewhere to place its chopsticks. Salt-Baked Chicken is light, Scallion Pancake shows the fundamentals, and salt-and-pepper ribs with Stir-Fried Stinky Tofu make rice disappear. It is not beside a metro exit and does not rely on decorative gimmicks, but when you want a dependable old restaurant for a lively shared meal, it remains solid.
