THE STORY

The story behind this place

An Austronesian restaurant grown from an Amis couple’s cultural search

Amis owner Ma-Yao and his wife Chao Che-ying run Lumaan together. From Ma-Yao’s devotion to Austronesian music to the couple’s exploration of the foods of different Austronesian peoples, they begin with tribal ingredients and add spices and techniques from across regions. The table becomes a stage for sharing cultural stories, while the idea of growing alongside tribal industries is woven into everyday operations.

Grilled Shrimp MetroBites visit photo

Grilled Shrimp

A row of shell-on shrimp is grilled for a direct aroma and clean seafood sweetness. Pickled white radish beside it separates the marine flavor from a crisp, refreshing bite.

Seasoned Pork Belly MetroBites visit photo

Seasoned Pork Belly

Sliced pork belly brings char, meatiness, and richness without overbearing seasoning. It is especially good with rice, which catches its comforting, home-style depth.

Grilled Fish MetroBites visit photo

Grilled Fish

The whole grilled fish has a stronger personality and suits diners who already enjoy grilled fish and direct seafood flavor. If sharing, check everyone’s preference first.

A TASTE OF TAIWAN

Charred seafood, pork aroma, and tribal ingredients on one table

Grilled shrimp brings clean seafood flavor with the crunch of pickled radish; pork belly uses char and richness to work especially well with rice; the whole grilled fish keeps a more direct, preference-dependent fish character. The table starts with familiar grilling and opens into Lumaan’s broader Austronesian food context.

FIRST VISIT

First visit: how to order

01
Start with grilled shrimp and pork belly

Both dishes have direct flavors and are easy to share. One from the sea and one from the land, they quickly set the barbecue rhythm for the table.

02
Add the grilled fish only if the table is into it

The grilled fish has a more distinctive character and may not suit everyone. For a group meal, it is better to check the table’s preferences before adding it.

03
Time your visit if you want the live music

Weekend live music usually starts at seven in the evening. If the performance is a main reason for your visit, confirm the day’s schedule when booking.

METROBITES LOCAL TIP
Ask about birthday mochi and live-music times when booking

Birthday guests for the month may get a chance to join a free mochi-pounding activity after the meal, but availability is limited. Weekend live music also follows a set rhythm, so asking about the day’s schedule when booking is the safest way not to miss either.

✨ AI Quick Bite Review

鹿馬岸南島人文主題餐廳 leans fully into an Indigenous and Austronesian identity, with its own character running through the interior, staff clothing, and the way dishes appear on the table. It is more than a place to eat; it works well when you want dinner to feel like an atmospheric gathering. Families, diners bringing older relatives, and anyone looking for a restaurant with a sense of setting may find it especially appealing. On weekends, if live music or on-site activities matter to you, timing is important. This is the kind of place that rewards planning ahead, booking first, and then settling in slowly.

Uncle’s line: At a place like this, you are not only eating the food—you are eating the whole table’s atmosphere. Get the timing right and the experience changes a lot.
A few things to know: The restaurant is in Qingpu, around the area opposite Hengshan Calligraphy Art Park, and is fairly easy to find. Weekend live music starts at seven in the evening; arrive too early and you may not catch the performance window. Guests celebrating a birthday that month may also encounter a free mochi-pounding activity after the meal, but it is limited and actual availability depends on the day’s arrangements.
● Grilled Shrimp

The grilled shrimp is an easy crowd-pleaser. It arrives with a direct, bright aroma and keeps the shrimp’s own fresh sweetness without a lot of decorative interference. It is the sort of dish that quietly disappears piece by piece. Eat it with the pickled white radish on the side and the texture becomes even cleaner, letting marine flavor and crisp refreshment pull apart into clear layers. The overall execution is steady.

The seasoned pork belly is straightforward and substantial. Meat aroma and richness are clearly present, but the dish never feels overly heavy, and it works particularly well with rice. Dishes like this can easily be buried under seasoning; here the seasoning mostly supports the pork itself, keeping a balance between home-style comfort and Indigenous flavor. It is a safe plate that tends to get picked clean.

The grilled fish is more dependent on personal taste. Its overall style is not the kind that everyone will love on first bite. If you prefer a very straightforward, clean fish character, it may be worth lowering expectations before ordering. Within the meal as a whole, it feels like one of the more distinctive dishes on the menu, though not necessarily the easiest crowd-pleaser, so choose according to your own preference.

💡 A Small Quality Note

If you are coming for the live music or the birthday activity, get the timing right; arriving too early may mean missing the program. Weekend dining tends to follow a clearer rhythm, so booking ahead usually saves trouble. If you are hoping for a particular dish, you can also confirm availability in advance.

  • The restaurant is in Dayuan, Taoyuan, around the area opposite Hengshan Calligraphy Art Park in Qingpu, a convenient area to combine with nearby stops.
  • The concept centers on Indigenous flavors and an Austronesian theme, with a consistent identity from the space to the service.
  • Representative dishes to look for include Grilled Shrimp, Seasoned Pork Belly, and Grilled Fish.
  • The interior combines Indigenous elements with a modern feel, and the light and atmosphere are especially distinctive around evening.
  • It suits families, groups of friends, diners looking for a restaurant with a sense of setting, and people who enjoy a meal with performance elements.

📌 Editor’s Take

鹿馬岸南島人文主題餐廳 is not a restaurant carried by a single signature dish. Instead, it turns the space, activities, and food into one complete experience. If what you want is Indigenous flavor and a lively gathering atmosphere, the restaurant has real presence. Weekend music, birthday activities, and the overall setting together give the meal more points to remember.
