THE STORY

The story behind this place

Wrapping a taste of home into Taipei mornings

Mama Liu moved from Hsinchu to Taipei with her son and daughter. Missing rice balls that suited her taste, she started a stall and gradually moved into a storefront. She brought preserved radish and pickled mustard greens from Zhudong, preparing the ingredients herself to retain familiar Hakka flavors. The days when the family wrapped rice balls together became the beginning of this breakfast shop.

Signature Purple-Rice Ball

The purple rice is fragrant and chewy, the youtiao crisp without being too hard, and the preserved radish crunchy with moderate salt. The rice does not overwhelm the fillings, maintaining a balance of grain aroma and flavor.

✨ AI Quick Take

劉媽媽飯糰 (Liu Mama Rice Balls) sits between the Guting and C.K.S. Memorial Hall neighborhoods. Though it has grown from a small stall into a permanent storefront, takeout, queues, and oversized rice balls still set the breakfast rhythm. There are many flavor combinations, and the rice can be switched to purple rice, but the heart of every order remains youtiao that is fragrant and crisp without being hard enough to punish your teeth. The Signature Purple-Rice Ball balances purple rice, preserved radish, and youtiao; the Surf-and-Turf Combo adds braised egg, corn, pork cutlet, and tuna, giving one rice ball enough ambition to carry you through half the day.

Uncle’s take: A big rice ball is not automatically impressive. Packing in plenty of fillings while keeping the bundle together—and making the youtiao crisp without scraping your mouth—that is a breakfast-stall craft.
Interior and dining atmosphere:This is primarily a takeout shop with no dine-in area. The work zone is fully screened, and the preparation and wrapping flow is orderly. Orders are handled in two lines, though peak crowds remain considerable. If you are in a hurry, avoid popular times or reserve by phone. Once your rice ball is ready, you can leave; there is no need to stand at the entrance studying more than twenty flavors until everyone behind you ages together. Pick the rice first, then a direction for the fillings, and things move much faster.
Location and ordering notes:The shop is at 臺北市中正區杭州南路二段88號1樓, about a 4-minute walk from Exit 6 of Guting (古亭站). There are 26 rice-ball combinations, with purple rice available for an extra charge; current prices and reservation methods are confirmed on site. Portions are generally large, so one is enough for an average appetite. If you truly want to compare two, sharing with someone is easier than using breakfast as a solo stomach-capacity test.
● Signature Purple-Rice Ball

The purple rice is fragrant and chewy without being greasy, and the outer layer is not so thick that it muffles all the fillings. Inside, the youtiao is crisp but not hard as wood, while the preserved radish crunches without excessive salt. Each chew shifts among grain aroma, crispness, and savory flavor. The rice ball is large, but its high proportion of filling makes it substantial rather than merely a lump of sticky rice. This is the clearest first order for judging the fundamentals—and the least likely to make you lose all breakfast decision-making ability before more than twenty combinations.

● Surf-and-Turf Combo Rice Ball

Braised egg, corn, pork cutlet, tuna, and the signature youtiao are wrapped together, creating a lively cross-section where nearly every bite finds a different filling. Only a thin layer of rice is used to hold it, yet the whole thing is wrapped firmly enough not to fall apart immediately despite the abundance. The pork cutlet is competent rather than the star, but the overall variety and fullness are high. It suits a large appetite or anyone who wants many fillings at once; ordinary stomachs should recruit a teammate.

Uncle’s take: The hardest part of a Surf-and-Turf Combo is not emptying the refrigerator into it. It is making sure the last bite still resembles a rice ball rather than a demolition site spread across the table.
💡 Ordering note

First-time visitors can choose the Signature Purple-Rice Ball; bigger appetites can move on to the Surf-and-Turf Combo Rice Ball. Switching to purple rice costs extra, so decide on flavor and price while in line. At peak times, a phone reservation can spare you part of the queue if you are in a hurry.

  • Location:臺北市中正區杭州南路二段88號1樓, about a 4-minute walk from Exit 6 of Guting (古亭站).
  • Type:Takeout rice balls, purple-rice balls, and breakfast with many customizable fillings.
  • Highlights:26 flavors, two ordering lines, large portions, crisp youtiao, and rice balls wrapped firmly together.
  • Good for:Commuters, students, manual workers, and anyone needing a highly filling breakfast.

📌 Editor’s wrap-up

What makes people willing to queue at 劉媽媽飯糰 (Liu Mama Rice Balls) is texture as well as size. The Signature Purple-Rice Ball balances fragrant, chewy rice with crisp youtiao and preserved radish; the Surf-and-Turf Combo Rice Ball pushes variety to the limit with pork cutlet, tuna, braised egg, and corn. The takeout process is direct, but the choices are numerous, so deciding on a flavor before joining the queue is the practical move. It feels heavy in your hand; how long one rice ball sustains you ultimately depends on whether your stomach or your workload is more ambitious.
