THE STORY

The story behind this place

A diner that grew beside a leathercraft workbench

Owner Lin Ming-zhi originally planned this alley space as a camera-leather workshop and decorated it by hand with vintage objects and Japanese collectibles. He first served freshly brewed coffee beside a few seats so customers collecting orders could rest.

After customers began asking for a menu, he gradually brought in dishes and drinks once made for his family. Today, wooden-box karaage bento, coffee, and handmade objects sit together, still showing how the workshop evolved into a diner.

A TASTE OF TAIWAN

Travel memories packed into a Japanese wooden box

The karaage bento was inspired by karaage set meals the owner often ordered while traveling in Japan. Rice, fried chicken, tamagoyaki, salmon, and sides fill separate sections, bringing the varied pairings prized in Japanese bento into a full meal.

METROBITES LOCAL TIP
Eat karaage hot and alternate with sides

Eat a few pieces of freshly served karaage first, then alternate with lotus root, vegetables, and soup. The sides in the wooden box are not decoration; pairing them alternately with rice reveals the bento's full range.

✨ AI Quick Review

Si Cang Bu Cang Si Café-Diner has a richly textured, vintage Japanese general-store style. A quiet alley setting, abundant wood, and small objects create a warm, photogenic atmosphere. Beyond full meals, its karaage, bento, bruschetta, desserts, and drinks each have highlights and reveal care in the details. For a café-diner near Jingan Station where you can sit, eat slowly, and take photos, it has real presence.

Uncle's note: The charm here is not showiness, but how solidly both space and food are made. Once seated, you want to stay a little longer.
Important: The shop is in an alley near Zhonghe's Jingan Station and is walkable from the MRT. It accepts multiple payment methods, charges no service fee, and offers self-service water. Food is cooked to order, so preparation takes some time.
● Karaage Bento

This bento captures the shop's handmade spirit, starting with its attractive wooden box. It is generously varied, with salt-grilled salmon, tender tamagoyaki, yuzu lotus root, cucumber-stuffed chikuwa, scallion pork rolls, octopus-shaped German sausages, and more sides. The signature karaage is fried golden and crisp, releasing juices and sweet chicken flavor with clean richness rather than heaviness. A light soup with generous tofu and mushrooms completes the meal.

Uncle's note: The strength of this bento is not simply piling on ingredients; every item has a role, leaving a grounded sense of satisfaction.
● House Bruschetta

This substantial light-meal set suits the afternoon. Toasted ciabatta is crisp outside yet airy within; eaten warm with herbed pork, its bread and meat aromas overlap. Cheese adds stretchy richness. Boiled egg, wild-greens Caesar salad, sweet potato, seasonal fruit, and handmade brown-sugar crisp oat-and-berry yogurt take the plate from savory to sweet. Crisp, sweet yuzu lotus root and fruit keep everything balanced rather than relentlessly rich.

● Salad (Japanese Karaage Chicken)

For something lighter, this salad can lead the meal. Varied greens—including red leaf, cranberry greens, arugula, mizuna, and komatsuna—join tomato, apple, and seasonal fruit for different crunch and moisture. Sunny-side egg, chestnut sweet potato, and yuzu lotus root add real satiety. Japanese karaage unites crisp richness and freshness, with mango yogurt, Caesar, or Japanese sesame vinaigrette for further variation.

📌 Editor's Summary

Si Cang Bu Cang Si Café-Diner is not loudly attention-seeking, but grows more characterful the longer you look and warmer the longer you sit. Vintage Japanese collectibles strongly define the space, while the food is substantial: karaage bento, bruschetta, salads, and desserts each have their own rhythm and detail.
