WHY VISIT

Why add it to your itinerary?

01
An old-fashioned flavor takes new hot and cold forms

Fermented rice adds a fermented aroma, snow ice turns the mung bean dessert into delicate flakes, and the latte combines coffee with mung beans. These variations suit anyone curious about new takes on dessert.

02
Make time for sweet soup in an alley

Upstairs windows look toward greenery by the park. The compact, quiet space makes ice or sweet soup a short break on a Nanyang Street outing.

THE STORY

The story behind this place

Bringing grandmother's summer sweetness back to Taipei

The founder grew up in Taipei but remembered the sweet mung bean dessert from summers at a grandmother's home in Pingtung. Missing it back in Taipei led to cooking it at home and eventually dreaming of a specialty shop. Repeated adjustments turned those memories of journeys between family homes into hot and cold desserts on Nanyang Street.

Bitter, aromatic coffee first meets milk and brown sugar; mung beans add a soft chew. It's a sweet-soup-and-coffee combination with personality.

A TASTE OF TAIWAN

From Pingtung mung bean soup to Taipei ice desserts

The 'suan' in lu dou suan refers to the cooked peeled beans' garlic-like appearance; there is no garlic. This shop brings Pingtung's familiar sweet soup and wood-roasted dried longan to Taipei, then develops them into snow ice. The traditional sweetness of mung beans shows how a regional snack can find a new place in city life.

Taste the ice first; add toppings gradually

Try a few bites of snow ice first, then gradually add the mung bean dessert and toppings to keep its fine texture. Don't spend too long taking photos or chatting—the ice melts.

✨ AI quick take

Between the cram-school streets by Taipei Main Station and 二二八公園, 綠豆蒜製研所 (Lu Dou Suan Laboratory) brings a familiar old-fashioned Hengchun dessert into a quiet alley. Alongside hot mung bean sweet soup, the menu includes wood-fired dried-longan aromas, fermented rice, snow ice and coffee. The ideas are creative without letting sweetness run wild. Whether you need a rest on Nanyang Street or want to see what a southern dessert can become in Taipei, this is a place to take your time tasting.

Uncle's two cents: When life hurries you along like the bell at a cram school, sitting down with a lightly sweet mung bean dessert can quiet your head for a few minutes. A few minutes will do. At my age, I'm not greedy.

The name lu dou suan can confuse newcomers: despite 'suan' meaning garlic, the star is peeled mung beans cooked into sweet soup. A dried-longan-scented base becomes hot and cold desserts and drinks, with taro and sweet potato balls, brown sugar pearls and mashed taro adding texture. Tradition hasn't been discarded; it's just put on a sharper Taipei outfit.

The space and dining atmosphere:Tucked into a narrow Nanyang Street alley, the shop is compact downstairs. Upstairs, greenery toward 二二八公園 offers a marked change from the rush of the cram-school streets. Seating isn't sprawling like a large dessert shop; it's suited to one or two people having ice or sweet soup. Chat away, but don't leave the quick-melting snow ice on the table watching it surrender.

Location and visiting notes:The address is 台北市中正區南陽街38巷2號, within walking distance of exit 4 at NTU Hospital (台大醫院站). One side of the alley leads toward 二二八紀念公園. The lane is too narrow for driving up to the door looking for a temporary stop. Find legal parking outside the alley for your car or scooter, then walk in. It saves trouble—and spares me a staring contest with the driver behind over a bowl of dessert.
● Mung Bean Sweet Soup with Fermented Rice

Mung Bean Sweet Soup with Fermented Rice starts with beans that are soft but haven't dissolved into mush. Dried longan gives a mellow sweetness, while fermented rice adds another aromatic layer. The fermented-rice character is more noticeable than plain sugar syrup; brown sugar pearls and taro and sweet potato balls bring alternating soft, springy and sticky-chewy textures. That assertive fermented note pushes some longan fragrance into the background. Traditionalists may need time to adjust, while those who like layers may find the bowl intriguing.

● Mini Mung Bean Snow Mountain

Mini Mung Bean Snow Mountain incorporates the mung bean dessert into a snow-ice block, shaved into fine, fluffy layers. The first impression is cool and lightly sweet, with extra mung bean dessert alongside to pour on at your own pace. The mini portion suits one person without making teeth and stomach work overtime to finish a huge basin. The drawback is practical: it melts quickly. Keep chatting and the little mountain becomes a bowl of cold sweet soup again. Have a few bites before the photos and life will feel more complete.

Uncle's two cents: Fine snow ice is kind to the teeth—no wrestling with rock-hard crushed ice. At this age, one less battle is a battle worth skipping.
● Mung Bean Brown Sugar Latte

Mung Bean Brown Sugar Latte uses mung beans as a chewy drink topping. Coffee's bitter fragrance, milk and brown sugar meet first, followed by the beans' soft texture. The first sip really is unexpected, as though coffee and an old-fashioned sweet soup were suddenly assigned the same table. After a few more sips, brown sugar brings them together, and the beans make the drink filling. It isn't the cautious choice, but it captures the shop's willingness to nudge tradition forward.

💡 Ordering notes

For an easy introduction, start with Mini Mung Bean Snow Mountain or plain sweet soup. Choose Mung Bean Sweet Soup with Fermented Rice if you enjoy that fermented aroma, and the brown sugar latte if you're open to an unfamiliar pairing. Eat the snow ice first and add toppings gradually; don't let photo time outlast melting time.

  • Location:台北市中正區南陽街38巷2號, walkable from exit 4 at NTU Hospital (台大醫院站), near 二二八紀念公園.
  • Type:Mung bean dessert, snow ice, old-fashioned sweet soups and creative coffee drinks.
  • Distinctive features:Wood-fired dried-longan fragrance underpins Hengchun dessert variations with fermented rice, ice and latte.
  • Suited to:Those who dislike cloying sweetness, want a refreshing afternoon treat or need to slow down briefly around Taipei Main Station.

📌 Editor's closing thoughts

綠豆蒜製研所 hasn't preserved an old-fashioned flavor as a museum piece. It lets longan aromas, mung beans and modern drinks move on together. The fermented-rice version has a distinct fermented fragrance, the mini snow mountain is fine and easy to eat, and the brown sugar latte challenges expectations. In a park-side alley, both the sweetness and the pace feel quieter than outside. My takeaway is simple: tradition can be remembered well and keep living in a different form.
