THE STORY

The story behind this place

Restarting after closure, renamed through memories of Qijin seafood

Gandou's restaurant history spans more than 30 years. Founders Hsu Tien-sheng and Mrs. Hsu once ran Phoenix Guangchuan Restaurant, closed for health reasons, then restarted in Zhonghe after four years' rest.

Hsu put memories of fresh seafood from military service in Qijin and a wish to give people away from home familiar flavors into the name Gandou. Cantonese foundations meet Sichuan, Cantonese, and Taiwanese cooking with made-to-order wok and grill rhythms.

✨ AI Quick Take

Hidden on the ground floor of an old apartment on Dayong Street, this understated rechao restaurant stays remarkably busy. Its smoky stir-fries meet modern operations: traceable ingredients and tablet ordering. Rice, ice cream, and appetizer edamame can be replenished free under house rules. It suits a lively weekend family dinner when nobody wants to cook and everyone wants hot dishes with bowls of rice.

Uncle's take: A clean room and proper wok heat win in rechao. This place creates an alley family-gathering mood while using traceable ingredients, which feels more reassuring than an ordinary roadside stall.
Setting and atmosphere:The clean, efficient ground-floor room in an old Dayong Street apartment works for two diners or families with elders and children. Tablets avoid shouting orders at a counter; rice, ice cream, and edamame follow on-site self-service or refill rules. Dinner peaks get lively, so reserve if you want a slow chat—before the family debates who forgot to call.
Location and dining notes:The address is No. 12, Dayong Street, Zhonghe District, New Taipei City; phone 02 2940 6751. It is about a 2-minute walk from Jingping Station. Hours are usually daily from 17:00 to 01:00 the next day, with online reservations available; confirm current hours and self-service items that day. Note no garlic or non-spicy requests when ordering, especially with children—do not expect the kitchen to read minds afterward.
● Grilled Fish Collar

The surface is lightly charred and dry-fragrant while flesh by the bone keeps fat and gelatin. Sticky richness, fish aroma, and grilled char arrive in sequence; slightly sweet pepper does not bury the fish. Pick slowly along bone seams to contrast a lightly crisp exterior with tender meat.

● Crispy-Skin Tender Tofu

Neat tofu blocks absorb sauce, with a supple exterior and delicate center. Sweet-savory sauce comes first, then soft, smooth tofu. Every block carries enough liquid to taste complete alone and extend its savor with rice. Without aggressive heat, it is easy for different palates to share centrally.

Uncle's take: Rechao need not rely entirely on heavy flavors. Tofu, grilled fish, greens, and clear soup make a table you can enjoy slowly.
● Stir-Fried Water Spinach

The spinach stays green; crisp, juicy stems meet leaves carrying wok breath and garlic. Neither dry nor fibrous, it resets the palate between meat and grilled dishes. Choose heat or adjust garlic when ordering, and agree on preferences before sending the tablet order.

● Oyster Soup

Clear broth carries the sea, with ginger and Thai basil adding spice and herbs alongside tofu and oysters. Light sweetness avoids thickening: hot ginger first, then oyster savor, with soft broth-soaked tofu. Oysters are small, but the refreshing combination is good to share between heavily seasoned dishes.

💡 Ordering Notes

First-timers can anchor the meal with Crispy-Skin Tender Tofu, add Grilled Fish Collar for sea flavor and char, then balance it with water spinach and Oyster Soup. In a small group, choose one from several categories and add more by tablet midway, which controls quantity better than front-loading similar dishes.

  • Location:No. 12, Dayong Street, Zhonghe District; about a 2-minute walk from Jingping Station.
  • Type:Taiwanese rechao, seafood, and family-style dishes.
  • Features:Tablet ordering, traceable ingredients, plus rice, ice cream, and other provisions.
  • Good for:Family gatherings, dinners with friends, and hot food after work.

📌 Editor's Summary

Gandou honestly merges traditional wok aroma with modern management. It avoids old-shop disorder and commercial distance, offering the reassurance of grilled fish collar and bowls of rice. Thoughtful seasoning, precise heat, and menu adjustments for different ages care for the whole table. For a family gathering or hot post-work meal, this alley-hidden Zhonghe main store is an exceptionally reliable card to keep.
