Consider it if you are nearby

“Liao Jia Tianbula is about the relationship between sauce and texture. Both bowl sizes contain assorted ingredients: springy fish paste, chewy rice blood cake and soft juicy daikon, all coated in a thick sauce. Garlic, chili and the final addition of hot broth create distinct changes in flavor. The modest lane-side shop keeps the direct, efficient style of its cart days.”

THE STORY

The story behind this place

From a street cart into a lane-side shop

Liao Jia Tianbula once operated from an irregular roadside cart on Songshan Road before moving into a permanent lane-side shop with simple seating and air-conditioning. The format changed, but the food stayed focused on small and large bowls of tianbula: a pot of ingredients, house sauce, and optional garlic and chili.

Large Tianbula Bowl

The large bowl adds more long strips of tianbula alongside fish balls, rice blood cake, daikon, sliced tianbula and fried tofu. Fish-paste items are springy, rice blood cake is chewy, and soft daikon creates contrast. Thick sauce clings to the surface, making it suited to bigger appetites and people who enjoy switching among textures.

A TASTE OF TAIWAN

Taiwanese fish-paste snacks with thick sauce

Liao Jia puts tianbula, rice blood cake, daikon and tofu in one bowl, using thick sauce plus garlic and chili to bring out the differences. Add hot broth after eating to dissolve the remaining sauce—an essential Taiwanese street-snack progression from solids to soup.

FIRST VISIT

First visit: how to order

01
Choose small or large first

The menu is essentially small or large bowls of tianbula. Choose by appetite; both sizes include a mix of ingredients.

02
State your garlic and chili preference

The shop asks whether you want garlic and chili. The chili is fairly forceful, so ask for less or have it served separately if you are sensitive to heat.

METROBITES LOCAL TIP
Keep the bowl and add broth at the end

After finishing the tianbula, keep the bowl and ask for hot broth. Stir it into the sauce left at the bottom; the thick sauce, garlic and chili open into the soup, creating a clear shift from eating the ingredients to drinking the broth.

This version localizes the original visit story while preserving the original photo sequence.

From a here-today-gone-tomorrow cart to a small lane-side shop

Liao Jia Tianbula used to appear unpredictably from a cart by Songshan Road, earning the nickname “the elusive tianbula.” It has since moved into 忠孝東路五段492巷 with a fixed storefront, air-conditioning and simple seats, but the menu remains focused: only small and large bowls of tianbula. Strips and slices of fish paste, oden pieces, fish balls, rice blood cake, fried tofu and daikon are covered in a thick house sauce. Garlic and chili lift the aroma, and broth added at the end turns the remaining sauce into a final, lighter course.

Inside & atmosphere:The current shop is small and tucked into a lane, with only a few simple tables and chairs, but it offers shelter and air-conditioning that the old roadside cart did not. A large pot of hot ingredients sits at the counter beside the house sauces. After you order, the owner scoops the ingredients, pours over sauce and asks about garlic and chili. There is no complicated menu or decorative staging; regulars tend to know exactly what they want, choose a size and sit down, preserving the cart’s brisk rhythm.
Location & visit notes:The current address is 台北市信義區忠孝東路五段492巷34號. Older information may still point to the former Songshan Road cart, so do not follow the old location. Garlic and chili noticeably change the bowl, and the chili has real force; ask for less or separate if needed. When the tianbula is finished, keep the bowl. Hot broth dissolves the sauce left at the bottom into an aromatic soup.
Small Tianbula Bowl

The small bowl is compact but still contains daikon, strips and slices of tianbula, rice blood cake, milkfish-flavored fish balls, oden pieces and fried tofu. The thick yellow-brown sauce is the thread tying everything together; garlic makes it more aromatic and a little chili adds direct heat. Daikon is cooked very soft and juicy with natural sweetness, while the fish-paste pieces stay soft yet springy and the rice blood cake keeps its own chew. For a first look at the house sauce and full range of textures, the small bowl is already complete.

Large Tianbula Bowl

The large bowl adds more long tianbula strips, with fish balls, rice blood cake, daikon, sliced tianbula and fried tofu appearing as you turn things over. Fish-paste products stay springy and chewy. Once coated in the thick sauce, the first impression is sauce aroma before each ingredient’s flavor emerges. Rice blood cake is fragrant and chewy, while daikon is the softest element and parts easily under chopsticks. Bigger appetites and people who enjoy shifting between textures in one bowl will find the large size more satisfying; add chili gradually.

大碗甜不辣
The soul of tianbula is not only the spring of fish paste, but also a spoonful of sauce that clings to every ingredient. Add broth at the end and the bowl is complete from rich to light.
Ordering note

Choose a small or large bowl by appetite; both contain several ingredients. Garlic amplifies the sauce’s aroma, while the chili is strong, so adding a little first is easiest. You can begin with the soft daikon, then compare the chew of long and sliced tianbula, oden pieces and rice blood cake. Finish by adding broth and stirring in the sauce left at the bottom.

  • Good for:Travelers after a traditional Taiwanese snack, fish-paste textures and a broth finish.

The shop is fixed now, but the bowl keeps the old rhythm

From an unpredictable Songshan Road cart to a lane-side shop with air-conditioning and seats, Liao Jia Tianbula has kept its defining traits: a simple menu, a distinctive sauce and ingredients that remain soft, springy, chewy and resilient in different ways. The small bowl is enough to understand the sauce and full assortment; the large bowl brings more tianbula strips and repeated changes in texture. Garlic, chili and the final hot broth move the flavor from concentrated to mellow. At the new location, do not let old cart listings send you the wrong way—and do not rush off after the last bite. Pour broth into the sauce left in the bowl to complete the eating style that has carried over from the old cart.
