THE STORY

The story behind this place

Books in front, coffee close at hand

Chen Cheng-ching worked at publishers and bookstores and taught for more than a decade; words were always part of her life. After retirement she learned pour-over coffee and baking. She first considered opening a café, but ultimately kept books at the heart of the space. After ten months of preparation, Fukuang Books was born on a Chifeng Street second floor.

The shelves lean toward photography, film, literature, philosophy, and contemporary thought, extending the conversation through talks, courses, and exhibitions. Coffee does not displace the books; it lets readers stay a little longer and gives the independent-bookstore ideal another measure of practical support.

● Wild Mushroom Pie

The Wild Mushroom Pie is a straightforward, easy light bite. Its filling stays moist and the mushrooms feel plump, never dry. The crust is serviceable, while moisture and aroma in the filling take the lead. It is not a glamorous dish, but it pairs naturally with slowly sipped coffee; in a bookstore café, food that leaves the pace undisturbed feels exactly right.

Uncle's take: Some places are not meant to fill you completely. They let time slow and the mind settle once you sit down. Fukuang Books is that kind of place.
💡 Editor's Note

For a quieter reading or work area, try the third floor first; the second carries more of the bookstore and coffee-counter bustle. You can stay awhile, but adjust your visit to the seats and crowd at the time. For a walk before or after, Chifeng Street has plenty of small shops and cafés to combine with the visit.
