THE STORY

The story behind this place

From Jiancheng Market to Changchun Road

Lee Hsueh-yu's family sold chickens at Jiancheng Market. After its demolition, she observed chicken cookery in Singapore and Malaysia and brought the familiar ingredient into her own restaurant. 雞家莊 began at No. 45 Changchun Road, later moving to No. 55, building a Taiwanese table around chicken.

✨ AI Quick Take

On this stretch of Changchun Road, a Taiwanese veteran of half a century is practically the city's chicken-cookery textbook. Facade, decor, and even a menu unchanged for a decade proudly embrace the old school. There is none of the chill of fashionable restaurants, only warmth from grandparent-aged servers. No wonder Michelin loves it and Silicon Valley leaders make a special trip here when back in Taiwan.

Uncle's take: The layer of fragrant fat under the skin confesses whether chicken is good; an old shop simply knows how to make it tell the truth.
Setting and atmosphere:The interior keeps the composed layout of a traditional Taiwanese restaurant, with period menus and furnishings and veteran servers who know the rhythm. Families, business groups, and tourists are common, and peak times are lively. The promise is attentive old-school hospitality, not cool refinement.
Location and dining notes:The address is 台北市中山區長春路 55 號. Reserve by phone for popular meal periods. Drivers may use the Linsen Park underground car park. If valet parking is offered that day, confirm the charge and hours before reaching the door.
● Three-Style Chicken

One plate combines poached, smoked, and silkie chicken. Poached meat is tender and sweet with delicate fat; smoked chicken is more savory; silkie chicken is firm and chewy without dryness. Alternate the three and use sweet chili sauce to change course: the clearest display of the shop's command of chicken.

● Chi Chia Tofu

Lift the rooster-shaped lid and tender tofu and diced chicken sit in savory oyster sauce. It is gentle yet excellent with rice, rich without being relentlessly salty. The homestyle dish's real power is making everyone unknowingly add another half-bowl of rice.

Uncle's take: Sesame-oil chicken needs time for the alcohol to turn sweet. Those few minutes are hardest when the next table has started eating.
● Sesame-Oil Chicken Pot

Sesame-oil fragrance arrives directly. Alcohol is obvious at first, then subsides with continued heating as the broth turns clear-sweet and mellow. Chicken is springy and plentiful. But aroma does not erase alcohol: drivers should skip it, because safety matters more than finishing the pot.

● Egg Pudding

Beneath the traditional shape is a silky texture, rich egg, and carefully restrained caramel sweetness—especially welcome after strongly flavored Taiwanese food. Complimentary service and presentation may vary by day; ask when ordering if you want it.

💡 Ordering note

For a first group visit, center the table on Three-Style Chicken, then add Chi Chia Tofu and chicken rice. The sesame-oil pot is alcohol-heavy, so drivers should avoid it. Chicken rice and white rice are usually extra; chicken rolls and sweet-potato leaves seasoned with chicken fat add more layers.

  • Founded on Changchun Road in 1974, it represents veteran Taipei Taiwanese cuisine and is reachable from 中山站 · Zhongshan.
  • Michelin recommended for consecutive years and favored by prominent political, business, and international guests.
  • Many servers are grandparent-aged, combining warmth with high professionalism.
  • The menu uses Chinese, English, and Japanese, making it friendly to tourists.
  • Simple sweet-potato leaves gain unusual aromatic depth from chicken fat.

📌 Editor's summary

雞家莊本店 (Chi Chia Chuang) has endured half a century through extreme focus on chicken and old-fashioned but precise service. Decor and menu show their age, yet decade-after-decade consistency is the charm. The average spend is not low, but the solid satisfaction justifies the price and Michelin recognition. For a polished, delicious Taiwanese meal in Taipei, this remains my first pocket-list choice.
