THE STORY

The story behind this place

It started with the aroma of her mother's vegetable buns

Mama Liu, originally from Zhudong, settled in Zhongli with her husband. Having grown up with the aroma of her mother's vegetable buns, she chose to sell vegetable buns and soups from the ground floor of their home near the market.

As the business gradually grew, the couple kept developing products and flavors. This rice-food craft carried on from family life became one chapter in the story of Hakka women building businesses in Zhongli's old city.

Shreds of taro are visible in the wrapper, while the filling contains pork and taro pieces. Savory fried-shallot aroma gives way to taro's natural sweetness, with a soft texture and satisfying heft.

A TASTE OF TAIWAN

Hakka rice-food craft continues in Zhongli

Vegetable buns and assorted rice cakes carry the familiar home flavors the founder grew up with. After moving from Zhudong to Zhongli, she brought her mother's craft into daily life near the market, letting travelers encounter this Hakka food tradition through rice wrappers and savory fillings.

METROBITES LOCAL TIP
Steam taro rice cakes soft, or pan-fry a browned crust

Taro rice cakes brought home can be steamed to restore their softness or pan-fried over low heat for a browned crust, depending on the texture you prefer. They are already savory, so taste them plain before adding a little sauce.

劉媽媽菜包店 is one of Zhongli's representative longtime Hakka rice-food shops, taking a practical, repeatable, variety-heavy approach. Being open 24 hours is especially convenient, whether you want breakfast, a snack with a regular meal, or a simple rice-based bite late at night. Hakka vegetable buns, taro rice cakes, and taro buns are the strongest presence here. The flavors are not flashy, but they have an old-school appeal that becomes easier to like with each bite, and the foods also work well as Zhongli souvenirs.

Uncle's line: What makes a place like this strong is not gimmicks. It is feeding generations of local appetites one piece of rice food at a time.
Dining room and atmosphere:The shop sits in the old Zhongzheng Road district. Up front are vegetable buns, Hakka rice cakes, bowl-shaped rice cakes, and assorted traditional rice foods, while production continues in the back to replenish the display. Takeaway customers may show up from early morning to late at night. The point here is to choose quickly, bag it, and go; dine-in conditions are not comparable to a polished café. With dozens of items, decide what you want before getting in line, rather than reaching the counter and only then opening a family breakfast meeting. Hot items are best when freshly made, and if you buy a lot, ask about storage and reheating.
Location and dining notes:The address is 桃園市中壢區中正路268號, phone 03 422 5226, in Zhongli's old city. It is walkable from both TRA Zhongli Station and Airport MRT A22 Laojie River (老街溪站). The shop is currently still open 24 hours. Vegetable buns, taro rice cakes, bowl-shaped rice cakes, and other items are supplied in batches, so popular flavors may temporarily sell out. Drivers should use nearby parking lots or legal spaces and walk over; Zhongzheng Road is not a private drive-through lane for idling with hazard lights while choosing rice cakes.
● Hakka Vegetable Bun

The Hakka Vegetable Bun uses a rice-based wrapper that is soft, sticky, and chewy, with enough thickness to hold the shredded-daikon filling without stealing attention from it. The daikon tastes naturally sweet, while white pepper and fried shallot aroma rise gradually. Warm is the best time to appreciate the rice fragrance. If it cools, steam it according to the shop's advice rather than microwaving it until the wrapper turns hard. It works for breakfast or a snack. One may not look large, but after three in a row, your waistband will remind you that this is rice.

● Taro Rice Cake

Taro Rice Cake is chewy and substantial, layering taro, crisp fried shallot, and savory pork. The more you chew, the more you feel the density of traditional rice food. Start with it plain, then add just a little thick soy sauce or chili; it already has seasoning, so there is no need to soak the whole piece. At home, steam it to restore softness or pan-fry it gently for a browned crust. Both textures are good. The one thing not to do is forget it in the fridge for three days and then blame the rice cake for losing its fresh-made soul.

● Taro Bun

Shreds of taro are visible on the surface of the Taro Bun, and the filling contains pork and taro chunks. Savory fried-shallot aroma comes first, followed by taro's natural sweetness and a soft texture. Wrapper, filling, starch, and meat make it more filling than its size suggests; one warm bun is already satisfying. Taro fans can buy one of these and one taro rice cake to compare. Just do not haul home a whole bag before discovering you are the only person in the family willing to join Team Taro.

● Preserved-Radish Bowl Rice Cake

The Preserved-Radish Bowl Rice Cake starts with a smooth rice batter, while preserved radish adds saltiness and crunch. It is simple but works well as a filling breakfast. Dig to the bottom so sauce, preserved radish, and rice cake come together in each bite; the flavor is more complete than scraping only the surface. Add sauce sparingly at first so you can still taste the rice. If you refrigerate a takeaway portion, reheat it according to the shop's advice before eating. This is not cold pudding, so do not pull it straight from the fridge and rely on willpower.

💡 Ordering Note

For a first purchase, try one each of the Hakka Vegetable Bun, Taro Rice Cake, and Taro Bun, then add a preserved-radish bowl rice cake if your appetite allows. Ask about storage and reheating before buying in bulk. The shop is open 24 hours, but individual items are supplied in batches, so call ahead if you want a specific flavor.

📌 Editor's Take

劉媽媽菜包店 makes Hakka rice food feel thoroughly everyday. There is no excessive packaging, but the more you eat, the more the underlying craft comes through. Being open 24 hours means it is not only a breakfast shop but also a convenient option whenever Zhongli locals want a traditional rice snack. If you like simple, satisfying snacks with a sense of place and memory, this is worth keeping on your list.
