“House-made focaccia, potato gnocchi, and chicken roulade filled with sweet potato leaves let Italian home cooking settle naturally into Taiwanese ingredients. The chef and his wife's story of returning to Taiwan also gives this small restaurant a clear background.”

WHY VISIT

Why add it to your itinerary?

01
Taste the dough first, then the sauce work

The focaccia is fermented and baked in-house, while the potato gnocchi have a fine, pillowy texture. Even without piling on ingredients, spicy tomato sauce, cheese, and eggplant carry the acidity, heat, and creaminess.

02
Italian technique meets Taiwan's seasonal vegetables

Rather than insisting on imported vegetables, the chef brings fresh sweet potato leaves, bok choy, and other produce into Italian cooking. The sweet potato leaves inside the chicken roulade are the most direct taste of that translation.

THE STORY

The story behind this place

From his hometown of Alassio to Fumei Street in Xinzhuang

Chef David worked in restaurants and hotels in several countries. After the pandemic, he returned to Taiwan with his Taiwanese wife Mindy, who also works in hospitality, and they later opened this homestyle restaurant in Xinzhuang. The name Alassio comes from his Italian hometown, condensing a cross-border life into the restaurant's name.

After coming to Taiwan, he did not try to reproduce Italian food ingredient for ingredient. He looked first at freshness: Taiwanese vegetables such as sweet potato leaves and bok choy can enter both pasta and main dishes. Techniques from home and the market in front of him therefore meet on the same menu.

An Italian chef and his Taiwanese wife returned to Taiwan to start the business together The restaurant is named after the chef's Italian hometown, Alassio

Potato Gnocchi with Spicy Tomato Sauce

Gnocchi kneaded from potato and flour are fine and pillowy, coated with fruity tomato acidity, mild heat, eggplant, and mozzarella. The serving looks light but is genuinely filling.

Chicken Roulade

Chicken breast filled with sweet potato leaves and baby oyster mushrooms is seared and then roasted, leaving a browned exterior and moist center. Sweet chicken jus and pan-fried potatoes round out the main.

Focaccia

Rosemary and olive oil lead the aroma of the warm bread. Soft and springy, it is good on its own, but worth saving a few pieces for spicy tomato sauce and pan juices.

A TASTE OF TAIWAN

Taiwanese sweet potato leaves enter an Italian chicken roulade

Traditional chicken roulade often uses spinach, but the chef switches to Taiwanese sweet potato leaves with the seasons, and even bok choy can become part of an Italian dish. This is not two cuisines forced together; it is Italian technique responding to Taiwan's fresh vegetables of the moment.

FIRST VISIT

First visit: how to order

01
Start with a pasta dish as your flavor baseline

The potato gnocchi best showcases the handmade dough and sauce. If there are two of you, add the chicken roulade and focaccia to share for a more complete meal than ordering one dish each.

02
Leave time for the rhythm of a small restaurant

The open kitchen and handmade preparation mean food does not arrive at fast-food speed. Seating, daily availability, and opening hours may change, so check the restaurant's latest notice before setting out.

METROBITES LOCAL TIP
Do not finish the focaccia at the start

Eat one piece hot to appreciate the wheat aroma, then save the rest until later in the gnocchi or chicken roulade to mop up the spicy tomato sauce and pan juices. That lets the bread go from opening sidekick all the way to the finish.

✨ AI restaurant snapshot

This Xinzhuang restaurant on Fumei Street is run by an Italian chef. The sign and exterior look rather polished, but the wave of cooking fumes on entering can make you wince; the ventilation clearly has room to improve. Put that aside, though, and the chef's devotion to handmade dough and sauces feels admirably old-school. He does not pile on seafood or sliced meat for visual effect, instead letting technique and sauce meet head-on. It is a locally uncommon taste of authentic Italian home cooking.

Uncle's verdict: Italians who truly understand food are tasting the craft in the sauce and dough. A plate buried in seafood sometimes only hides a cook's lack of confidence.
Interior and dining atmosphere:The restaurant is tucked into a residential lane off Fumei Street. The space is small, and the open kitchen keeps kneading, sauce-making, and baking close to the seats, giving it the welcoming feel of a family-run Italian restaurant. Because the heat of cooking is right in front of you, fumes and smells may be stronger when it is busy; those sensitive to odors should be prepared. Most dishes are handmade, so the pace is not that of a chain. If you have come for slow craft, do not schedule the rest of your day like you are racing for the last train.
Location and dining notes:The address is No. 41, Lane 128, Fumei Street, Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City, in a residential lane in the Touqian redevelopment area. By MRT, walk from Xingfu Station or New Taipei Industrial Park Station (新北產業園區站). The restaurant is jointly run by an Italian chef and his Taiwanese wife, and the name Alassio comes from the chef's hometown. Seating and daily availability are limited, while operating days, lunch and dinner hours, and reservation arrangements may change; check the latest restaurant notice before going. Parking in the lanes is not easy, so drivers should not budget zero time for finding a space.
● Focaccia

The Focaccia is fermented and baked in-house, with rosemary and olive oil on the surface. Tear it open and the crumb is soft yet springy. Eat one piece hot for the pure wheat aroma, but do not rush to clear the basket: saving the rest for spicy tomato sauce or pan juices is the practical move. Good bread may look like a supporting player, but it often cleans up every sauce on the table—and even the dishwasher will thank you.

Uncle's verdict: Cooking is like character. Build a sound foundation and even nothing more than tomato and cheese can win people over.
● Potato Gnocchi with Spicy Tomato Sauce

The Potato Gnocchi with Spicy Tomato Sauce are kneaded from potato and flour. Their texture is fine and pillowy, not the firm, chewy style of Taiwanese mian geda. The tomato sauce brings fruity acidity and mild heat, while eggplant and mozzarella cling to the gnocchi, combining tang, dairy richness, and starchy sweetness. Mix the sauce well before eating so the heat does not collect suddenly at the bottom of the bowl. The portion looks restrained; its filling power is more candid.

● Chicken Roulade

The Chicken Roulade wraps sweet potato leaves and baby oyster mushrooms in chicken breast, then is seared and roasted. Cut open, it shows distinct layers of greens and mushrooms. The outside is browned while the center stays moist, and sweet chicken jus with pan-fried potatoes makes the dish more varied than plain chicken breast. Eat it hot, as the chicken tightens if left too long. If dryness worries you, start with a thicker slice—and do not spend so long taking photos that time confiscates the chef's careful doneness.

💡 Ordering note

For a first visit, pair Focaccia with Potato Gnocchi with Spicy Tomato Sauce and choose Chicken Roulade as the main. Sharing between two people makes it easier to compare the dough, sauces, and heat control. The restaurant is small and service runs slow, so reserve ahead at busy times. Anyone sensitive to cooking fumes or rushing to another appointment should judge accordingly.

  • Location:No. 41, Lane 128, Fumei Street, Xinzhuang District, in a residential lane within the Touqian redevelopment area.
  • Type:Homestyle Italian cooking, handmade dough, gnocchi, and main courses.
  • Distinctive features:Jointly run by an Italian chef and his Taiwanese wife, with an emphasis on house-made bread and sauces.
  • Good for:Diners who want to take their time over authentic Italian home cooking and are comfortable with a small restaurant's pace and lane-side location.

📌 Editor's conclusion

Uncle thinks opening this restaurant on Fumei Street in Xinzhuang takes a streak of idealism. Still, the handmade potato gnocchi and bread kneaded by the chef genuinely show the foundations of authentic Italian home cooking. This is not about high value for money or speed. Pick an unhurried weekend, slow down, and see what pure sauce craft tastes like.
