“Crab that is fried first and then tossed with garlic, plus the pairing of seaweed and clam meat, give this seafood spread clearly different flavor layers. Together with the founder’s Penghu cooking background and private-room setting, it is worth a short detour for travelers planning a group seafood meal.”

THE STORY

The story behind this place

A hometown table born from a Penghu apprentice’s journey

The founder left Penghu in his early teens and apprenticed in seafood restaurants in Taiwan. After more than ten years building his craft, he opened Hai Tian Xia to introduce more diners to the food of his Penghu home. The restaurant has operated since 1983, and that journey away from home to learn the trade remains the starting point behind today’s Penghu seafood table.

Garlic Salt-Fried Crab

The crab is fried first, then tossed with plenty of garlic, so crisp fragrance comes first and the crab’s sweetness follows. The meat stays moist rather than drying out. The claws are pre-cracked for easier eating, making this a good choice for anyone who likes assertive garlic aroma with layered crab flavor.

Stir-Fried Penghu Seaweed with Clams MetroBites visit photo

Stir-Fried Penghu Seaweed with Clams

Seaweed and clam meat are stir-fried together for a lightly crisp texture and briny savor. The seasoning stays clean, letting the clams’ freshness come through, and it offers a useful change of pace between richer seafood dishes.

Pumpkin Rice Noodles MetroBites visit photo

Pumpkin Rice Noodles

The sweetness of pumpkin and the savor of small clams soak into the rice noodles, so even the staple keeps the flavor of a seafood banquet. Served in small bowls at the table, it suits anyone who wants a little noodle dish without giving up the taste of the sea.

A TASTE OF TAIWAN

Bringing Penghu hometown flavors to Kaohsiung

Hai Tian Xia’s Penghu identity comes from the founder’s wish to share the flavors of home after learning his craft away from the islands. Seaweed with clams and pumpkin rice noodles with small clams bring seafood flavors into both vegetables and staples, making them a useful entry point to the restaurant’s Penghu-style table.

✨ AI Visit Snapshot

Hai Tian Xia is one of Kaohsiung’s rarer old-school banquet-style seafood restaurants. The exterior is understated, but inside it is clearly built for serious hosting. The seafood cooking focuses on timing and handling rather than flashy presentation, keeping freshness, aroma, and the sense of occasion in balance. It is a strong fit for anyone who wants a dependable place to entertain guests and values private rooms and experienced service.

Uncle’s take: A restaurant that really knows seafood does not need noise to prop it up. When the dishes land on the table, everyone should immediately know the host meant business.
Dining room and atmosphere:The restaurant looks modest outside, but inside it is a banquet space centered on private rooms, artwork, and polished tableside service. The founder came from Penghu to Kaohsiung, spent more than ten years building his seafood skills, then opened Hai Tian Xia to focus on Penghu cuisine. Many restaurant cooks have trained here as well, and that role as a kind of finishing school is more memorable than any extravagant decor. Most people come here to host properly, not for two people to improvise a political-business banquet on a whim.
Location and dining notes:Hai Tian Xia is at 高雄市新興區林森二路188號, phone 07-281-0651, near Linsen second Road and Qingnian first Road, and walkable from Central Park (中央公園站). Lunch and dinner are served in separate periods, and private rooms or large banquets should be reserved. Seafood is priced by season, catch, and weight, so confirm cooking method, portion, and price when ordering. Hosting with style does not mean waiting until the bill arrives to start doing mathematics.
● Garlic Salt-Fried Crab

This is almost the restaurant’s calling card. The crab is fried first, then tossed with garlic for a bold aroma and clearly layered flavor. Crisp fragrance and the heat of minced garlic hit first, followed by the crab’s natural sweetness. The cooking is controlled enough that the meat stays moist rather than dry. The claws are also prepared to be easier to handle. It arrives with presence, but still eats with refinement.

● Stir-Fried Amberjack with Cabbage

Amberjack brings plenty of gelatinous richness, and a quick stir-fry with pickled cabbage makes the overall flavor surprisingly easygoing. The slippery fish texture and bright sourness of the vegetable balance each other without becoming heavy. It is a dependable table dish that quietly keeps a seafood banquet from leaning too rich.

● Stir-Fried Penghu Seaweed with Clams

Seaweed and clam meat are stir-fried together for a texture that is lightly crisp yet fresh, with an unmistakable briny aroma as you chew. The seaweed does not overpower the dish; instead it makes the clam flavor clearer. The result is refreshing and useful as a change of pace among richer seafood dishes. It wins through clean, fresh ingredients rather than heavy seasoning.

● Pumpkin Rice Noodles

Pumpkin Rice Noodles look simple, but they are very good at taking care of a whole table’s appetite. Pumpkin lays down a sweet base, while small clams add freshness so the noodles offer more than mere fullness, finishing with a seafood note. They are portioned into small bowls at the table, making this an easy staple for both older diners and children.

● Steamed Squid

Steamed squid is where the ingredient quality is easiest to see. The point is simply to put its freshness on the table without hiding it under sauce. The squid is naturally sweet and springy, and the simpler the cooking, the more clearly the seafood itself comes through. For a smoother sequence, start with the head section and then move to the body.

💡 Ordering note

Make the Signature Garlic Salt-Fried Crab the centerpiece, then add Stir-Fried Amberjack with Cabbage and Stir-Fried Penghu Seaweed with Clams for different Penghu seafood notes. Pumpkin Rice Noodles cover the staple, while Steamed Squid lets you judge freshness and heat control directly. For a group, have the restaurant size portions to the number of diners first, then add the dishes you truly want. That is steadier than letting everyone announce one dream seafood dish each.

  • Location:高雄市新興區林森二路188號, walkable from Central Park (中央公園站).
  • Background:The founder opened the restaurant after more than ten years learning seafood cookery, specializing in Penghu cuisine and training many restaurant cooks along the way.
  • Highlights:Penghu seafood, private rooms, banquet dishes, and experienced tableside service.
  • Good for:Business entertaining, family celebrations, large group meals, and diners who value privacy and seafood quality.

📌 Editor’s wrap-up

Hai Tian Xia is compelling not because it chases new trends, but because it preserves what a long-running seafood restaurant should do well: steadiness, precision, and a sense of occasion. From the private-room atmosphere to the cooking, it is well suited to proper hosting and to diners who care about the natural flavor of seafood and the quality of the table.
