WHY VISIT

01
A Group Meal Inside a Sanheyuan

Tables fill the front courtyard while former side rooms serve as private dining rooms. Red brick and the old-house layout give shared plates the warm, communal feel of a traditional Taiwanese banquet, ideal for family or friends.

02
Seafood and Staples with Distinct Textures

Tiger prawns keep their sweetness under a light garlic aroma, while the flat rice noodles are smooth and chewy. The salted egg yolk whitebait sticky rice is drier and more separate-grained, with savory richness and scallion fragrance.

THE STORY

The story behind this place

A Family Table in a Preserved Old Home

The sanheyuan that houses 溫叨 was the He family’s ancestral home, preserved by a joint decision of later generations. The family renovated the house, placing dining tables in former side rooms so the old layout itself became part of today’s gathering space.

Out in the front courtyard, a whole table sharing banquet dishes recalls the bustle of Taiwan’s traditional roadside feasts; inside the side rooms, sitting close together feels more intimate. Here, the old house and the shared table become part of the journey’s sense of reunion.

✨ AI Visit Snapshot

溫叨古早味料理餐廳 brings the nostalgic feel of a sanheyuan together with the lively spirit of Taiwanese banquet cooking. The moment you walk in, it feels made for a shared meal. It suits diners looking for set dishes and banquet-style plates, as well as family gatherings, larger groups, or anyone who wants an old-house setting and a dependable meal in Taichung. The cooking is steady and approachable, with familiar Taiwanese flavors that are unfussy yet memorable.

Uncle’s take: At a place serving banquet dishes inside a sanheyuan, you are not just paying for the setting. Once the food lands on the table, you can tell there is real, serious cooking behind it.
Interior and dining atmosphere:Owner Lin Chih-hua recreated memories of his grandparents’ sanheyuan in the restaurant. Red-brick walls, former bedrooms converted into private rooms, and courtyard tables make a gathering feel like coming home for dinner before the food even arrives. The space naturally suits banquet dishes and large shared meals: older diners understand the appeal, while younger guests do not feel as if they are merely tagging along. With a large group and many dishes, service may move more slowly than at a small table; count conversation as part of the meal and resist checking the kitchen door every three minutes.
Location and dining notes:溫叨古早味料理餐廳 is at 台中市北屯區太原路三段191號. Phone: 04-2231-1699. It opens daily for separate lunch and dinner sessions. Limited parking is available in the open area in front on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reserved spaces; if it is full, use nearby parking. Private indoor rooms and large tables are best booked in advance, and any signature dishes that require pre-ordering should be confirmed at the same time.
● Poached Chicken with Japanese-Style Salad

This cold dish arrives with the visual presence of a banquet opener. The poached chicken is clean and refreshing, and the house sauce makes it smoother and more rounded rather than just tasting like plain chicken. The salad beside it is brightened by Japanese-style dressing, keeping the overall plate light, whetting the appetite for what follows, and balancing the pace of the meal.

● Garlic Flat Rice Noodles with Tiger Prawns

This is the kind of dish that sticks in your mind. The tiger prawns taste fresh and naturally sweet, while the garlic stays light enough not to overwhelm the seafood. The real crowd-pleaser is the flat rice noodle: tender, chewy, slightly sweet and silky without losing bite. Paired with the prawns’ savoriness, it is a no-gimmicks dish that somehow disappears from the table.

● Salted Egg Yolk Whitebait Sticky Rice

The sticky rice is cooked so the grains remain distinct, giving it a drier, almost fried-rice-like texture rather than a clumped one. Savory salted egg yolk coats the grains, while whitebait and scallions complete the aroma. It is a reliably satisfying staple with both substance and flavor, and usually one of the hardest dishes to leave unfinished.

● Black Garlic Clam Chicken Soup

The final soup makes a satisfying finish. Black garlic deepens the broth, while clams and chicken lift its savoriness. It is mellow and easy to drink, especially welcome in cooler weather. This is not an aggressively seasoned soup; it is the kind that grows more comforting sip by sip, with a generous amount of ingredients. After a full table of dishes, a hot bowl wraps up the meal neatly.

💡 Ordering tip

Poached chicken, tiger prawns with flat rice noodles, whitebait sticky rice, and Black Garlic Clam Chicken Soup line up neatly as a cold starter, main dish, staple and soup. With a bigger group, add dishes according to headcount rather than forcing a whole banquet onto two people. If you want barrel-roasted chicken or another dish that requires advance ordering, ask ahead—showing up with good intentions alone will not magically produce the chicken.

📌 Editor’s summary

The appeal of 溫叨古早味料理餐廳 is how naturally it combines an old-house setting, the bustle of a Taiwanese banquet, and dependable shared cooking. The dishes are not flashy; they are the kind of straightforward flavors older diners nod at and younger diners enjoy just as easily. If you want a Taichung restaurant for a larger gathering with a touch of nostalgic Taiwan, this one deserves a place on the list.
