THE STORY

The story behind this place

A brother carries on his sister's restaurant and a Hong Kong chef's craft

Shang Xiang began when Yeh Yun-hsien's eldest sister brought in a Hong Kong chef to cook Cantonese food. Yeh worked in the restaurant with his sister and the chef when he was young, later taking over while continuing traditional methods alongside the veteran chef. That continuity is evident in the cooking of the crispy chicken and in the cured-meat techniques he learned from the chef and later adapted to Taipei's conditions.

✨ AI Visit Notes

Tucked into a quiet corner of Beitou's Wenhua Park, this long-established Cantonese restaurant has been open for thirty years. Well known in Beitou, it has an elegant wooden facade surrounded by peaceful trees and greenery, with classic large Chinese round tables inside. Skillful traditional Cantonese cooking and substantial signature dishes make it a dependable gathering place for longtime Beitou families on weekends, and even overseas visitors come specifically for the food.

Interior and atmosphere:Set amid park greenery, the restaurant mainly has Chinese round tables, along with smaller tables. Antiques and wooden details preserve the composed feel of an old restaurant. Weekends, festivals and family mealtimes fill up easily; the atmosphere is lively without the clamor of a stir-fry joint. Mention older guests, children and table preferences when booking, so the family doesn't end up politely squeezing around a table that's too small.
Location and dining tips:The address is 台北市北投區中央北路一段228巷1弄4號, about a 5-to-6-minute walk from Beitou (北投站). You can enter the Wenhua Park area beside 吳家牛肉麵. Drivers can use nearby paid parking; ask when booking whether the restaurant has other parking arrangements. Tea charges, set meals, holiday menus, closing days and complimentary desserts may change, so follow the restaurant's latest notices.
● Shang Xiang Crispy Chicken

The chicken is glossy and golden, its skin fried until it crackles while the meat stays juicy. Careful control of heat keeps these opposite textures in the same piece. Seasoning is simple: the chicken and the frying skill take the lead in this signature dish seen on almost every table. The skin is crispiest while hot, so don't get distracted taking a family photo first. The photo will keep; that crunch won't.

● Cantonese Cured-Meat Platter

The platter combines cured pork, Chinese sausage and liver sausage: savory pork, slightly sweet sausage and a deeper flavor from the liver sausage. Slices are neither too thick nor too thin, and chewing releases more fat and wine aroma. Raw garlic slices cut through the richness with their pungency, making this a capable drinking companion. Cured meats are salty, so don't tackle the whole thing yourself. The table is meant to share the work.

● Jade Dried Scallop Soup

The green spinach base contains egg-white wisps, shredded dried scallops and shrimp. It looks elegant and feels silky, with seafood flavor tucked into the finely cut ingredients. The thickening is noticeable: warming at first, but potentially starchy and heavy after more bowls. Small portions served hot are just right. If older guests prefer clear soup, ask about alternatives when ordering; the whole table needn't join me in a viscosity challenge.

● Fragrant Eggplant Clay Pot

Peeled eggplant is simmered until soft and brought to the table bubbling in a clay pot with minced meat, scallions and chili. Savory and mildly spicy, its sauce makes rice disappear fast. Peeling gives it a finer texture, though eggplant absorbs oil and sauce and can feel rich toward the end. No need to play the hero by eating it alone. Rice and greens are the natural companions to a Cantonese clay pot.

Uncle's words: Forty years in a park isn't about having plenty of trees. It's about chicken skin that really crackles when it arrives. An old restaurant's reputation rests on its control of heat.
💡 Ordering Notes

For six or more, reserve the crispy chicken first, then build the meal with cured meats, eggplant clay pot, seafood or steamed fish, adding simply stir-fried loofah for balance. The soup is quite thick, so consider the tastes of older guests and children. Ask about parking and holiday menus when booking.

  • Highlights:About forty years in business, a veteran Hong Kong chef's craft, Wenhua Park greenery and antique collections.

📌 Editor's Wrap-Up

上享庭園餐廳 (Shang Xiang Garden Restaurant) has quietly remained popular inside the park for thirty years thanks to its signature chicken, crisp-skinned and tender, and its exceptionally peaceful garden setting. With the savory, rice-friendly Fragrant Eggplant Clay Pot and a substantial cured-meat platter, it remains a dependable, presentable local Taiwanese-Cantonese choice in Beitou for dining with older relatives or enjoying an elegant meal after a hot-spring soak.
