WHY VISIT

Why add it to your itinerary?

01
Seafood meets familiar, painstakingly prepared dishes

Mud crab meat and roe enrich mapo tofu, while Yuan Xue with Scallion Oil sets aromatic heat against thick-cut fish, giving familiar, labor-intensive dishes new layers.

02
Set aside a meal for a proper gathering

With few tables and the host serving courses in sequence, this is for gatherings where the meal itself is the focus, not a hurried stop for food.

03
A tableware specialist’s path to private dining

Sun Bicheng imported tableware before retirement, then ran a noodle shop and prepared private Chinese banquets—a change of direction that adds a personal story to this lane-side gathering.

THE STORY

The story behind this place

From the tableware trade to a private dining table

Before retiring, host Sun Bicheng worked in tableware imports, later turning his attention to a noodle shop in a Donghu lane. By 2018, a bylined food column had documented his private Chinese banquet dishes. Alongside noodles, carefully prepared shared meals gradually became another calling card.

Today, the focus is private dining booked mainly by regulars. Moving from noodles to full-table meals changed more than the menu: a meal became a gathering to plan ahead for and enjoy slowly.

Yuan Xue with Scallion Oil

Thick-cut fish is tender, chopped chilies supply fragrance and heat, and generous scallions and scallion oil tie the whole plate together.

Mud Crab Mapo Tofu MetroBites visit photo

Mud Crab Mapo Tofu

Mud crab meat and roe replace the usual minced meat. The tofu absorbs the seafood savoriness, with chili heat and a numbing edge adding further layers.

Wuxi-Style Ribs MetroBites visit photo

Wuxi-Style Ribs

Bone-in pork belly is braised until soft. The rich sauce balances savory and sweet notes; eating the fat and lean together gives the full texture.

METROBITES LOCAL TIP
Save room for the sauce on Yuan Xue with Scallion Oil

The scallion oil and chopped-chili sauce at the bottom of the plate are good with rice or noodles, carrying the dish’s aromatic heat even after the fish is gone.

✨ AI Quick Take

《喜相逢麵館》 is no longer an ordinary noodle shop where you can walk in for a bowl whenever you like. It is a private kitchen with only a few tables, booked mainly by regulars. Host Sun spent 9 years living and working in Shanghai; his understanding of ingredients and Shanghai and Jiangsu–Zhejiang cooking later became full-table dishes such as Yuan Xue with Scallion Oil, Mud Crab Mapo Tofu, and Wuxi-Style Ribs. Eating here takes more than a budget—you also need a way in and some patience.

Uncle’s line: At this age, we come not just for flavor but for a rare chance to get together. Still, however hard the door is to open, work out the budget first. Do not let the romance turn into a credit-card bill.

Xi Xiang Feng began as a noodle shop. In 2018 it started taking advance orders for private dishes, formally becoming a reservation-only private kitchen about a year later. Sun lived and worked in Shanghai for 9 years, ate at a range of local restaurants, and brought his standards for ingredients back to Donghu. This is not a place to stop on impulse for a quick meal. It is a full-table experience requiring the group size, appetites, time, and budget to be planned together.

Setting and dining atmosphere:The exterior is understated, and a closed metal door does not necessarily mean the place is shut. There are very few tables inside. The host serves, explains, and rounds off the meal in sequence, creating an intimate atmosphere with none of the usual rush to turn tables. Portions are often substantial. If you want to finish every dish, your companions’ appetites matter more than their camera equipment.

Location and dining notes:The address is 台北市內湖區東湖路106巷7弄3號, about an 8- to 10-minute walk from Exit 3 of Donghu (東湖站). Bookings are mainly for regulars; turning up to wait for a table is not a suitable approach. Dishes, ingredients, and costs can change with the season and the arrangements for the whole table. Have a regular or the restaurant confirm everything clearly before you set out.
● Yuan Xue with Scallion Oil

Thick-cut yuan xue fish is topped with chopped chilies and plenty of scallions, then given an aromatic lift by scallion oil made with olive oil. The fish is substantial yet tender; the chilies add fragrance and heat, and the scallion oil brings everything together. The sauce at the bottom is good with rice or noodles too, but do not finish all your starch at the start—there is a whole table of dishes still waiting its turn.

● Mud Crab Mapo Tofu

Instead of relying on the usual minced meat, this mapo tofu uses mud crab meat and roe. The tofu soaks up the seafood savoriness, while chili heat and numbing spice add depth. The crab must be carefully picked by hand, making this much more involved than everyday home-style mapo tofu. The season’s crab affects the result, and the reserved menu still depends on the arrangements for that visit.

● Yilan Soft-Shell Lobster

Yilan soft-shell lobster is seasonal and difficult to source. Its appeal is a shell that is easier to eat while the meat retains its spring. Unusual ingredients like this are not available whenever you feel like ordering them. If it appears on your menu, listen to the host explain the preparation before digging in. However greedy this uncle gets, I do not mistake seasonal ingredients for a permanent buffet.

● Wuxi-Style Ribs

Bone-in pork belly is braised until it can be separated with chopsticks. The sauce is deep in color and balanced between savory and sweet; fat and lean need to be eaten together for the full texture. It is wonderful with rice and dangerously good at making you overestimate your capacity. If several seafood courses have already gone down, divide it into small pieces and take your time, rather than announcing your retirement before dessert.

💡 Ordering note

Meals here are arranged for the whole table, so confirm the headcount, budget, dietary restrictions, and booking method first. If dessert brings red bean soup with tangyuan and aged dried tangerine peel, its fragrant, lingering sweetness can round off the substantial courses. The menu still follows the season.

  • Location:台北市內湖區東湖路106巷7弄3號, about an 8- to 10-minute walk from Exit 3 of Donghu (東湖站).
  • Type:Private dining booked mainly by regulars, with carefully prepared Shanghai and Jiangsu–Zhejiang dishes.
  • Highlights:Gradually transformed from a noodle shop into a private kitchen from 2018, with few tables and an emphasis on ingredients and the pace of the whole meal.
  • Good for:Guests with access through regulars and sufficient budget who want to host a meal or arrange a special gathering.

📌 Editor’s wrap-up

What makes 《喜相逢麵館》 special is not just how hard it is to get in. Sun brings the flavors he learned in Shanghai, his ingredient standards, and the rhythm of private dining to one table. Yuan Xue with Scallion Oil has substance, Mud Crab Mapo Tofu takes painstaking work, and Wuxi-Style Ribs put your resolve around rice to the test. This is not an impulsive outing, but with everything arranged, it really is a gathering to eat your way through slowly.
