WHY VISIT

Why add it to your itinerary?

01
Watch handmade naan go onto the oven wall

Kneading, shaping, and pressing the bread against the oven wall all happen at the market stall, where charcoal draws out the aromas of dough and sesame together.

02
One flatbread linking Xinjiang and Banqiao

After marrying and moving to Taiwan, the owner missed the flavors of home, learned to make naan, and has operated in a Banqiao market for over a decade.

03
More than savory and sweet naan

Beyond savory and sweet Xinjiang naan, shredded-radish flatbread and scallion-scented triangular flatbread bring still more textures.

THE STORY

The story behind this place

From Xinjiang hometown flavors to a Banqiao market

After marrying and moving from Xinjiang to Taiwan, the owner missed the flavors of home and learned to make naan, eventually starting her own flatbread business in Banqiao's evening market.

The stall has operated in Banqiao for more than a decade. The couple still begin by kneading the dough themselves, then shape it by hand and bake it over charcoal to continue each fresh batch.

Scallion and wheat aromas are wrapped together. The exterior picks up fragrance from the oven while the center stays soft and springy, adding another turn in texture beyond plain naan.

A TASTE OF TAIWAN

From an everyday Xinjiang staple to a Banqiao market

Naan is an everyday staple in Xinjiang, where making it is also known as “da nang.” This market stall brings hometown wheat-based food into daily life in Banqiao, using hand shaping, sesame, and charcoal fire to show the essentials of baked naan.

FIRST VISIT

First visit: how to order

01
Ask what is in the current batch

The different flatbreads do not all come out of the oven at the same time. Check the available items and wait time at the stall before deciding whether to wait for the next batch.

METROBITES LOCAL TIP
Reheat after it cools

Fresh naan has its fullest aroma and crispness straight from the oven. If it becomes dry and firm at home, briefly rebake or warm it to loosen the texture again.

✨ AI Market Stall: Quick Take

新疆烤饢 is tucked away at the far end of Banqiao's Chongqing Evening Market. After marrying and moving from Xinjiang to Taiwan, the owner built a business around the flatbreads of home. Naan and filled breads are made entirely by hand, then baked fresh over charcoal to bring out wheat, sesame, and fire aromas together. Beyond savory and sweet naan, there are shredded-radish flatbreads and Triangular Scallion Flatbread. They taste best straight from the oven; arrive late and only the aroma and regret may remain.

Uncle's line: With handmade flatbread like this, fresh from the oven is heaven and cold is a test of commitment. Whether you reheat it at home decides which version you get.

The stall carries a clear story of migration and entrepreneurship. The owner married and moved from Xinjiang to Taiwan, bringing familiar naan and wheat-based pastries into a Banqiao market. Kneading, shaping, and pressing the dough onto the oven wall are all done by hand, while charcoal adds another layer of toasted aroma. These are not snacks stockpiled in bulk: making them on site takes time, and they may sell out early.

Setting and eating atmosphere:This is a handmade flatbread stall in a market lane, centered on production and fresh batches rather than a restaurant with full table seating. While waiting, you can watch the rhythm of shaping, loading, and turning the breads as dough and charcoal aromas fill the air. Keep the market aisle open for other shoppers instead of becoming a roadblock while photographing the oven.

Location and visit notes:The address is 新北市板橋區仁愛路62巷15弄2號, at the far end of Chongqing Evening Market near Chongqing Junior High School. It is still some distance from Far Eastern Hospital Station (亞東醫院站); transfer to YouBike or take a bus to Chongqing Junior High School stop. Confirm opening, baking times, and sellouts with the shop in advance.
● Savory Xinjiang Naan

Savory Xinjiang Naan centers on wheat and sesame aromas with a light saltiness. Its bite is springy yet substantial, revealing more charcoal and grain fragrance as you chew. Straight from the oven, the exterior is crisp while the inside retains elasticity; once cool, it becomes dry and firm. If you cannot finish it that day, rebaking or briefly warming it restores a better texture.

● Sweet Xinjiang Naan

Sweet Xinjiang Naan adds the aroma of maltose to the outside without overwhelming the dough or charcoal character. Hot, it is crisp outside and springy within. As it cools, the sweetness becomes more concentrated and the bread chewier, making it suitable for cutting into small pieces and sharing with tea.

Uncle's line: Sweet flatbread is at its worst when sugar drives out the aroma of dough; this one still knows restraint. If more things in life understood how to use two fewer spoonfuls, Uncle would have a much easier time.
● Shredded-Radish Flatbread

The filling in the shredded-radish flatbread has a natural sweetness, while sesame on the exterior adds aroma. It is milder overall than heavily seasoned flaky pastries. Moist shredded radish balances the wrapper, keeping it from becoming cloying too quickly when eaten alone. It offers a change in texture for anyone who does not want only thick, substantial naan.

● Triangular Scallion Flatbread

Triangular Scallion Flatbread combines scallion and wheat aromas. The oven toasts the exterior while the inside stays soft and springy, giving both flavor and texture a little more variation than plain naan. It is best eaten first when fresh from the oven; at home, reheat it according to the bread's condition.

Fresh baking and storage:Handmade charcoal flatbread has its fullest aroma and crispness straight from the oven, becoming firmer and chewier once cool. If it feels dry after you take it home, rebake or steam it. Follow the shop's guidance for actual storage time rather than guessing.
💡 Ordering notes

On a first visit, compare one Savory Xinjiang Naan with one Sweet Xinjiang Naan, then add a shredded-radish flatbread or Triangular Scallion Flatbread for a different texture. Time your visit around a fresh batch if you want them hot, and consider contacting the shop first so a special trip to the market does not end with only the smell of charcoal.

📌 Editor's verdict

What makes 新疆烤饢 memorable is more than thick, increasingly aromatic bread. It is the story of an owner who brought the flavors of Xinjiang to Banqiao and built a business. Handmade preparation and fresh charcoal baking make timing part of the flavor, while savory and sweet naan, shredded-radish flatbread, and Triangular Scallion Flatbread each have a personality. Arrive early and eat them hot; that is much fairer than buying them cold and complaining they are dry.
