WHY VISIT

Why add it to your itinerary?

01
Two distinct ways to grill eel

Simply seasoned shirayaki reveals the eel's richness and charred aroma; kabayaki adds sweet-savory sauce that works with the rice below.

02
The handwork behind the fine bones

The eel is charcoal-grilled, with its fine bones also attended to by hand. This labor, together with heat control, defines the restaurant's cooking.

03
Skewers bring variety to the meal

Grilled eel skewers have a more pronounced charred surface, while the Beef Skirt Skewer offers springiness and meaty flavor. Both work for sharing alongside an eel main.

04
A well-known name with over 3,000 reviews

Google currently shows around 4.4 stars from 3,912 reviews, a straightforward gauge of popularity for first-time visitors.

THE STORY

The story behind this place

From metalwork to the grill, with patience

楊承樺 moved from Beigang in Yunlin to Taipei to work in metalworking. He worked by day and sold skewers at a night market at night. An eel-rice meal sparked the idea of opening an eel restaurant. From skills built at a grill stall to opening 板前屋 in Nangang, he brought the patience of everyday work to eel and charcoal.

A TASTE OF TAIWAN

Yunlin ingredients in Japanese-style eel rice

板前屋 pairs Japanese shirayaki and kabayaki techniques with eel, soy sauce and rice from Yunlin. To control quality, the owner invested in eel farming in his hometown, connecting this meal to Taiwanese producers and the Taipei table.

METROBITES LOCAL TIP
Enjoy the shirayaki while hot

Try the shirayaki as soon as it arrives to enjoy its lightly crisp surface and rich eel fat. Grilled eel skewers are also best shared hot, before they cool.

✨ AI dining impressions

板前屋炭烤鰻魚飯 takes eel rice seriously: live eel, slow charcoal grilling and time spent handling fine bones. Shirayaki lets the fish speak, while kabayaki uses restrained sauce to support its richness. Eel and beef skirt skewers are on the menu too, but first-time visitors should save room for eel. The lasting impression comes from fire, fish and handwork, rather than luxurious plating.

Uncle's take: There aren't many places still willing to grill slowly over charcoal and attend to the fine bones afterward. When the eel arrives thick and fragrant with char, I know this bowl isn't hiding behind its sauce.

板前屋 focuses on preparing live eel and working with charcoal. Eel is rich in fat: rush the fire and it burns, go too slowly and it can dry out. Fine bones need extra work as well, so both shirayaki and kabayaki retain their texture. That invisible time deserves more attention than a couple of decorative flowers beside the bowl.

The setting and atmosphere:The interior follows the style of a Japanese eel-rice and skewer izakaya. You can settle into a quiet main meal, with more of a charcoal-grill-and-drinks atmosphere in the evening. It isn't a large restaurant, so call to reserve at popular times. Charcoal cooking takes time. If you're rushing for a train or a film, don't expect the cook to work like a microwave.

Location and dining reminders:The address is 台北市南港區研究院路一段88號, about a 7-minute walk from Exit 5 of Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center (南港展覽館站). The official page currently lists lunch and dinner sessions, with Monday and Tuesday closures. The shop name states final food service at 22:00, but confirm hours and last orders when reserving so older information doesn't clash with the day's arrangements.
● Shirayaki Eel

Without a thick glaze, the surface grills lightly crisp and fragrant over charcoal, while the inside keeps its fat, springiness and natural sweetness. With no heavy sauce to hide behind, fish quality and heat control are laid bare. If you want to judge the fundamentals, this dish is more honest than any elaborate description.

● Kabayaki Eel Rice

The sauce avoids becoming relentlessly sweet or salty. Instead, sweet-savory flavor and charcoal aroma support the eel's fat, while the rice absorbs sauce without turning simply wet and sticky. The bowl looks modest but is deep, allowing a balance of fish, sauce and rice through the last bites.

Uncle's take: Great eel rice isn't about more sauce. It's about the sauce stepping back and the fish still holding its own. When you can taste the charcoal and the texture of the flesh, the bowl has earned its place.
● Grilled Eel Skewer

Cutting eel for skewers gives it more surface contact with the charcoal heat, making the charred aroma clearer while keeping richness inside. If you want a little more eel after the main, a skewer is lighter than another whole bowl. It smells best just off the fire; don't let it sit through the conversation until cold.

● Beef Skirt Skewer

Beef skirt has rich fat and springiness, with a texture that grows meatier as you chew rather than melting into softness without character. It changes the pace of an eel-filled table and goes well with a drink. Good heat control leaves it aromatic outside and still juicy within.

The skewers overall:The restaurant doesn't rely on eel alone. Other skewers also show careful heat control and restrained saucing, so the charcoal aroma comes through. On a first visit, a skewer or two is enough to supplement the main. Don't crowd out the memory of the eel rice just to prove how much you can eat.
💡 Ordering notes

For a fuller introduction, make Kabayaki Eel Rice the main, share some shirayaki with your companion, then add a grilled eel skewer or Beef Skirt Skewer. Ask about shirayaki availability and eel quantities when booking.

  • Location:台北市南港區研究院路一段88號, about 7 minutes from Exit 5 of Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center (南港展覽館站).
  • Type:Charcoal-grilled eel rice, shirayaki and Japanese skewers.
  • Highlights:Live-eel preparation, slow charcoal grilling and attention to fine bones, with kabayaki sauce that doesn't overpower the fish.
  • Good for:Eel-rice fans, two diners sharing shirayaki and kabayaki, and evening skewers with a drink.

📌 Editor's wrap-up

What stays with you at 板前屋 is increasingly rare, patient work: caring for live eel, charcoal and fine bones, then giving shirayaki and kabayaki their own voices. Shirayaki shows the fish itself; kabayaki rice balances sauce, charcoal and rice; the skewers prove the grill is more than a supporting act. There are other choices for cheap, huge bowls. For eel rice that lets you taste the time and handwork, this is worth a visit.
