“Worth a short detour for made-to-order crisp wheel cakes with sweet or savory fillings, especially as a takeaway afternoon snack. Large orders need production time.”

WHY VISIT

Why add it to your itinerary?

01
A substantial crisp shell around a generous dual filling

The fillings are generous, but the shell still has enough thickness and aroma to be noticed. Custard and red bean combine bean fragrance with smooth cream without letting sweetness overwhelm the cake.

02
Tuna, corn and cheese for a savory variation

The tuna filling is moist rather than dry, corn adds sweetness and cheese brings savory richness. It is clearly different from sweet wheel cakes and works well for savory-snack fans.

03
Single fillings and taro combinations both available

Besides custard and red bean, there are taro, milk crumble and chocolate. If you want two sweet fillings in one cake, choose red bean with taro or custard with taro.

Tuna, Corn & Cheese Wheel Cake

The tuna filling stays moist without a noticeable fishy smell, while sweet corn and savory cheese build a richer flavor. The outside keeps the crispness of a freshly baked wheel cake.

FIRST VISIT

First visit: how to order

01
Plan it as a takeaway snack stop

The shop mainly serves takeaway and delivery, making it a good weekday afternoon snack stop. Check that it is open before heading over.

02
Contact the shop first for group orders

The wheel cakes are made to order in batches on the griddle. For a large order, call ahead and allow extra waiting time.

METROBITES LOCAL TIP
Do not wait too long with the savory filling

The tuna, corn and cheese filling is moist and will soften the shell if left too long. Eat it hot after pickup to enjoy both the crisp exterior and moist filling.

Nanjing FuxingAfternoon snack | Uncle Wheel Cake: the queue-worthy red-bean cake you can only buy during office hours, with generous fillings and many flavors

There are many office workers around Nanjing Fuxing, and when afternoon snack time comes, Uncle Wheel Cake often lands on office order lists. It is about a 5-minute walk from Nanjing Fuxing, near Liaoning Street Night Market, and is not hard to find.

The shop opens Monday through Friday 13:00~18:30, right in ordinary working hours. That makes it great for office group orders but not especially easy for a typical worker to buy unless someone can step out in the afternoon, call ahead, or order through delivery. By the time work ends, there is a good chance it will already be closed.

If you are looking for food near Nanjing Fuxing, an afternoon snack around the station, or recommended wheel cakes in Taipei, this little shop has plenty of buzz.

Location and transport

Uncle Wheel Cake is near Nanjing Fuxing, around a 5-minute walk from the MRT. Office buildings and commercial spaces surround the area, and Liaoning Street Night Market is not far away, so weekday afternoons can be busy.

This neighborhood is actually good for an afternoon-snack walk. A short stroll from Nanjing Fuxing gets you to the shop, provided the timing is right. Because it only opens on weekday afternoons into early evening, visitors coming specifically for it should check opening that day and consider pre-ordering to avoid a wasted trip or long wait.

Shop and atmosphere

車輪大叔脆皮車輪餅-遼寧總店 (Che Lun Da Shu — Liaoning) visit photo

Uncle Wheel Cake is a small takeaway shop focused on pickup and delivery. Several wheel-cake griddles can work at the same time, but large orders or a queue can still mean a wait.

Most cakes are made to order. Straight off the griddle, the shell is crisp and very hot, which is also when it tastes best. If a big order is ahead of you, the wait can stretch out, so come when you are not in a hurry.

Despite the name “Uncle Wheel Cake,” the person at the griddle may not be an uncle at all, but a young woman skillfully managing the pans. The contrast is pretty funny and adds a light little memory while waiting. Honestly, I prefer the young lady grilling them XD.

Menu and ordering

There are many flavors: basic custard, red bean and taro, plus sweet choices such as milk crumble and chocolate, and savory options like tuna, corn and cheese. With more than 20 flavors, the range is broad.

There are also mixed fillings such as red bean with taro or custard with taro. Very practical if choosing is hard: one cake gives you two fillings.

Most wheel cakes cost more than 20 dollars each, so they are not especially cheap, but the filling is generous and substantial. There is also a buy 8 get 1 promotion, which makes more sense for an office group snack order.

Custard & Red Bean Wheel Cake

車輪大叔脆皮車輪餅-遼寧總店 (Che Lun Da Shu — Liaoning) visit photo

Custard and red bean is a classic combination and a safe first flavor. Fresh off the griddle, the shell has real crispness and aroma. It is not just soft batter; there is thickness and bite.

The red bean and custard are well balanced. The beans bring their own fragrance, while the custard adds smoothness. Sweetness stays moderate and does not become cloying, friendly even for people who usually find red-bean cakes too sweet.

The strength of this one is that the filling is full without making the shell disappear. I prefer wheel cakes where both shell and filling still have a clear presence, rather than biting in and finding nothing but filling.

Tuna, Corn & Cheese Wheel Cake

車輪大叔脆皮車輪餅-遼寧總店 (Che Lun Da Shu — Liaoning) visit photo

Tuna, corn and cheese is one of the more memorable savory choices. It tastes a little like taking a breakfast-shop tuna, corn and cheese egg pancake and wrapping it in a wheel-cake shell.

The tuna mixture is moist enough, not dry, and without an obvious fishy smell. Corn brings a little sweetness, while cheese adds salty aroma and richness. It works very smoothly and suits anyone who does not want dessert but still wants something hot in the afternoon.

The shell remains in the crisp style and is best eaten hot. With savory fillings, leaving it too long lets moisture soften the outside, so eat it soon after pickup.

Who it suits

Uncle Wheel Cake suits anyone looking for afternoon snacks around Nanjing Fuxing, wheel cakes in Taipei, or office group treats. If someone from a nearby company can step out in the afternoon—or the group is willing to pre-order delivery—it is a very good snack option.

It also suits people who like wheel cakes packed with filling. Each one has real heft rather than feeling like an airy snack. One is enough to take the edge off hunger, and with a drink it works nicely as afternoon tea.

The catch is that its hours are very much weekday office hours, which is not friendly to people who are only free after work. If you want it, go in the afternoon or pre-order with coworkers to reduce the chance of missing out.

After the walk

What makes Uncle Wheel Cake appealing is how it turns a traditional red-bean cake into an office-afternoon snack. There are sweet, savory and mixed fillings, all generously packed, so the cakes feel more substantial than a typical small snack.

On this visit, custard and red bean was a reliable classic with moderate sweetness and a crisp shell when hot. Tuna, corn and cheese was more like a savory pie snack—moist and savory, ideal for people who do not want sweets. It is not the cheapest, but the amount of filling and made-to-order texture make the price reasonable.

The real downside is the very selective opening schedule. It works for office snacks, group orders and delivery, but it is unfriendly if you only want to stop by after work. If you happen to be near Nanjing Fuxing with time for an afternoon walk, put it on your list—just go early, or today’s wheel cake will have to become tomorrow’s.
