THE STORY

The story behind this place

From an alley stall to a three-generation shop

Emmanuel means ‘God is with us.’ Originally run by an elderly Christian man, the shop was taken over by the Hsu family in 1977 and now reaches its third generation. It moved from a stall in Hangzhou South Road 11 Alley to the current shop due to construction, reopening in 2021, month 10 with its familiar soup and noodles intact.

Fresh Fish Soup

A whole tilapia is cut into the bowl, with delicate flesh and gelatinous skin in clear broth fragrant with basil and free of muddy distraction. Move fish to the small bowl, separate bones slowly, then eat it with the soup to keep the flesh intact.

Rice Vermicelli and Noodles (Small) MetroBites visit photo

Rice Vermicelli and Noodles (Small)

Rice vermicelli and noodles are kept warm, plated with bean sprouts, and topped with minced pork. The vermicelli is springy and slightly dry; the noodles are soft and moist. Alternating thickness and hydration, joined by savory pork, pairs well with clear fish soup.

FIRST VISIT

First visit: how to order

01
Wait for seating instructions inside

The shop is narrow, some seats face the wall, and waits are possible at peak times. Follow staff seating instructions and ask whether the fresh fish soup has sold out.

METROBITES LOCAL TIP
Layer garlic and vinegar into the mixed noodles

Taste the noodles first with their savory minced-pork topping, then add small amounts of the table garlic sauce and vinegar for pungency and acidity. Add chili sauce to taste for clearer heat.

✨ AI Quick Take

以馬內利鮮魚湯 is on Hangzhou South Road in Taipei's Zhongzheng District, from Exit 3 of Shandao Temple Station, about a 5-minute walk. This Taiwanese old-timer evolved from an alley stall into today's shop. Its signature is soup cooked with a whole tilapia, paired with Rice Vermicelli and Noodles. The choices are simple but distinctive, suiting diners who value clear fish broth, traditional minced-pork noodles, and do not mind a short peak-time wait.

Setting and dining atmosphere:The former street stall is now a narrow shop. Some seats face the wall, yet the space is cleaner and brighter, with a simple modern feel. Lines often form at peaks; staff assign seats and the brisk neighborhood-snack rhythm continues. The compact menu centers on fish soups, fried vermicelli, fried noodles, and other soups, so diners decide quickly and tables turn fast.
Location and dining notes:The address is 臺北市中正區杭州南路一段3號, from Exit 3 of Shandao Temple Station, about a 5-minute walk. Seats and fish soup may run out at busy times, so arrive with some flexibility. Tilapia contains bones; slow down and use the small bowl or plate provided for them. Fried noodles and vermicelli can be ordered together as Rice Vermicelli and Noodles.
● Fresh Fish Soup

A whole tilapia is cut into the bowl while retaining its generous portion. The broth is clear and fresh, with basil rising in the steam. Flesh is delicate, skin distinctly gelatinous, and no bothersome muddy note intrudes. Transfer fish to the small bowl, remove bones slowly, and return each intact piece to the broth.

● Rice Vermicelli and Noodles (Small)

Fried rice vermicelli and noodles share one plate after being kept warm in a steamer, then receive bean sprouts and minced pork. Vermicelli is springy, chewy, and slightly dry; noodles are softer and moister. Their differences vary every bite, while savory pork unites them. Chili sauce is available for extra pungency.

💡 Ordering notes

First-timers can pair Fresh Fish Soup with Rice Vermicelli and Noodles (Small), alternating basil-scented broth with springy vermicelli and soft noodles. Taste the minced-pork savor first, then adjust with garlic sauce, vinegar, or chili. Because the fish has bones, use the supplied bowl to separate flesh and bones rather than swallowing quickly.

📌 Editor's Summary

以馬內利鮮魚湯 moved from an alley stall to its current Hangzhou South Road shop. Its name means ‘God is with us’; the Hsu family took over in 1977 and continues into a third generation, with the third-generation younger sister and brother-in-law running this branch and the second generation helping. In the bright narrow room, the formula stays direct: whole tilapia supplies delicate flesh, gelatinous skin, and basil fragrance, while Rice Vermicelli and Noodles (Small) combines springy vermicelli, soft noodles, sprouts, and minced pork. For a time-tested everyday bite near Shandao Temple, this soup-and-noodle pairing expresses the shop completely.
