“The pork chop is lightly crisp outside and tender inside, pairing well with the clean-tasting egg fried rice. It is a good option when you want a substantial piece of meat without especially greasy rice. The cook previously worked at Din Tai Fung and now runs this small shop focused on fried rice and noodles.”

WHY VISIT

Why add it to your itinerary?

01
Thick pork chop with light, egg-fragrant fried rice

The freshly fried pork chop is lightly crisp outside while the meat stays tender and juicy; the fried rice leans on egg aroma and fresh scallion fragrance. The meat feels substantial, but the rice itself is not greasy, so one plate gives you two distinct textures.

02
From restaurant experience to an alleyway fried-rice shop

The cook previously worked at Din Tai Fung before opening 巢飯麵食館. Fried rice and noodles are the focus here, and the quick, practiced wok-tossing in the kitchen is part of the everyday scene you can watch while eating.

Blanched Greens

This visit’s greens were cabbage, served with a clean sweetness and a bit of crunch. Alongside the pork chop egg fried rice, it gives you a fresh vegetable bite between mouthfuls of meat—good if you want a lighter side dish.

A hidden surprise by Taipei City Hall! The legendary “budget Din Tai Fung” 《巢飯麵食館》—my secret after-work food mission!

Friday afternoon, and the office air was already full of weekend energy. I was staring at my monitor while worrying about what I should eat alone after work when my ears suddenly perked up: the senior guy at the next desk and one of the veteran women in the office were deep in a food conversation.

She said, “There’s a fried-rice place in an alley by Taipei City Hall that people call the ‘budget Din Tai Fung.’ The meat is super thick and the rice smells amazing. My husband and I go every week!”

The guy jumped in: “That place is seriously good. If you don’t get there early and line up, you basically won’t get to eat!”

Budget Din Tai Fung?! The moment those five words floated into my ears, I kept pretending to work seriously on my report, while my hands were already clattering across the keyboard to secretly write down 《巢飯麵食館》. As a rookie who has only just started working and whose savings are still struggling uphill, the real Din Tai Fung is a payday luxury. Once I had accidentally overheard the local office workers’ private favorite, the second the quitting bell rang I packed my bag, transformed instantly into a lone gourmet, and followed the secret route from my little note straight to the shop!

The place is hidden in a tiny alley beside Taipei City Hall MRT Station and is honestly easy to miss. Without my coworker’s directions, I could probably pass it a hundred times and never notice it. Yet it somehow has a 4.4-star rating on Google! The moment I stepped inside—wow, the crowd was no joke. It was packed with office workers who had just finished work.

Even more eye-catching was the cook’s sharp wok technique. The tossing, the rapid stir-frying—my inner theater started applauding wildly: Chef! Please use that wok to heal the rookie soul that has been battered all week!

Looking over the menu, fried rice and noodles are the specialties here—no xiaolongbao, by the way. But the real point is the price. It is generous enough to make me want to cry! The signature Pork Chop Egg Fried Rice is only NT$170, almost half the price of Din Tai Fung!

Pork Chop Egg Fried Rice

The moment the plate of Pork Chop Egg Fried Rice landed on the table, I screamed internally: wow! This looks ridiculously similar!

Wave after wave of egg aroma and fresh scallion fragrance came up from the plate, and the grains of rice looked golden and glossy. I shoved in a bite immediately—wow, the grains really are distinct! Compared with Din Tai Fung, I think the rice here is just a touch softer and moister, but the difference is tiny enough to ignore. This is not a heavy-oil, heavy-salt style; it is dry, clean, and almost elegant. The egg and scallion aromas are fully brought out, making it incredibly easy to eat and not greasy at all.

And that fried pork chop deserves a huge round of applause of its own!

They are seriously generous with this pork chop—it is even thicker than Din Tai Fung’s! Fresh from the fryer, the outside has a light crispness; take a big bite and the meat is extremely tender, not dry at all, with juices slowly coming through. Thick, satisfying meat with clean egg fried rice: one bite of pork, one bite of rice. This is absolutely the highest form of Friday-after-work salvation. Passed with full marks!

As a refined girlie, naturally I had to order: Blanched Greens

Okay, even though I came alone today, as a sophisticated “girlie” I still had to add a portion of Blanched Greens and pretend I care deeply about nutritional balance (laughs). Today it was a plate of bright cabbage, sweet and crisp when bitten. Nothing complicated—just honest, tasty cabbage that helps break up the richness of the meat. Passed!

Sneaking information from my coworkers at work and then secretly detouring after work to test 《巢飯麵食館》 felt like finding treasure. For a sweetly low price, you get Pork Chop Egg Fried Rice that feels almost copy-pasted from the famous version and reaches an impressively high standard. The value is absurdly good.

The only catch is that there are so many office workers nearby that meal periods get extremely busy. If you want to eat here, move fast—or copy the savvy regulars and call ahead before picking up your takeaway!

Those of us who just started working may not yet have the refined lifestyle of eating Din Tai Fung every day, but if we quietly remember the tips our seniors drop, an NT$170 plate of budget pork fried rice after work—with thicker meat and more fragrant rice—can make a rookie’s Friday night feel more respectable and satisfying than anyone else’s.
