The story behind this place

A family's path from honey to coffee

After Cao Shih-hua took over his father's honey business, he studied coffee roasting and brewing in different places and steered the family enterprise in a new direction. His son continued the pastry craft, and coffee with Chinese sweets gradually became the shop's familiar scene. Memories remain of former matchmaking guests returning years later with grandchildren, linking the family's craft to customers' lives.

✨ AI Quick Take

蜂大咖啡 (Fong Da Coffee) is one of Ximending's defining old cafés, following an unpretentious old-Taipei style that ages well. Roasting beans and pastries perfume a room with little flash but unmistakable personality. It is an excellent place for quiet coffee with classic sweets, especially for visitors who appreciate old-fashioned cafés and the textures of traditional pastries.

Uncle's take: This place is not great because it has many tricks. Coffee and pastries both stand firmly on their own; pairing them simply shows the most skill.
Important note: Fong Da Coffee is on Chengdu Road in Ximending, about a 5-minute walk from Exit 6 of Ximen Station and easy to find. The café occupies two floors, with roasting equipment visible by the entrance and the aroma of freshly roasted coffee often inside. Pastries and coffee are paid for separately, so order pastries at the entrance counter before taking a seat if you want both. Cards are not accepted, and each guest must order a drink.
● Hazelnut Latte

Hazelnut Latte is steady and well executed, with a clear nutty fragrance, mellow coffee, and fine milk foam. There is little showy packaging—just a dependable cup with good finish. If a strong black coffee is not what you want, this is easy to accept and equally easy to pair with pastry.

● Mung Bean Cake

Mung Bean Cake carries the classic flavor of a traditional pastry. Its texture is fine, the sweetness restrained, and the overall feeling quietly reassuring in the way old-fashioned sweets can be. Coffee balances its sweetness and bean aroma particularly well. This is for anyone seeking a familiar flavor inside an old café: no gimmicks, just details and pacing that reward slow eating.

📌 Editor's Summary

Fong Da Coffee does not win through lavish décor. Its long-standing character, steady coffee aroma, and a few classic pastries gradually persuade people to stay. For a genuinely usable place in Ximending with a sense of age, where you can sit down for coffee and sweets, it belongs on the shortlist. Fans of old Taipei flavors are unlikely to be disappointed.
