WHY VISIT

Lamb paomo begins with dry flatbread for guests to tear before it returns to the kitchen for soup, making participation part of understanding the dish.

THE STORY

The story behind this place

A northwestern food story on Yanji Street

A 2007 feature at this same address already showed owner Lin Hui-ling introducing Shaanxi cuisine, dish lore, and the decor at Qin Wei Guan. From tables to walls, every element tried to carry diners toward the distant Northwest.

Years later, hand-torn paomo, broad noodles, beef, lamb, and spices still define the restaurant. A visit is less about choosing one main than sharing a whole range of flavors with the table.

FIRST VISIT

First visit: how to order

01
Bring a full table

Portion sizes vary widely, and many dishes are made for sharing. A larger group can more easily arrange soup, fish, skewers, and dessert.

02
Ask about dishes when booking

Some large dishes require advance preparation. Ask about the items and portions you want when reserving, then adjust for the day’s availability after you arrive.

METROBITES LOCAL TIP
Tear the paomo into smaller pieces

The finer you tear the dry flatbread, the more broth it absorbs when returned to the kitchen. Small pieces give a more even texture than large chunks.

✨ AI Quick Take

《秦味館 Qin Wei Guan》 lays Shaanxi, Xinjiang, Mongolian, and northern Shaanxi flavors across a table on Yanji Street, with sourness, heat, cumin, and spices all showing distinct personalities. Dining here is interactive: tear the flatbread for Lamb Paomo before it goes back for broth; grilled rib comes with an old-dish story; finish with Mongolian Fried Milk Tofu. It is popular and has many advance-order dishes, so it works best for a group. Two people ordering the whole spread will quickly turn bold appetite into a takeout-packing exam.

Uncle’s line: Sometimes a meal should give your hands something to do. Your fingers may ache from tearing paomo, but watching hot broth pour over it makes the work worthwhile. Many hurdles in life are not this manageable; at least with this flatbread, smaller pieces really do absorb more flavor.

Qin Wei Guan’s identity runs from its entrance through the interior: frontier- and cave-inspired decor, celebrity signatures on the walls, and many regional northwestern dishes make it unlike an ordinary family-style restaurant. Several large dishes need advance preparation, so ask while reserving. Decide only after arrival and you may be left gazing at another table’s crispy chicken or rib. Mature people should learn to let go, I know, but that is hard when hungry.

Setting and dining atmosphere:Earth tones, cave forms, and antique-style elements evoke the desert frontier; celebrity signatures line the walls, and the tables suit shared group meals. At busy times, voices and service both move quickly, while spices arrive with every hot dish. It may not suit a quiet heart-to-heart, but it is ideal for dividing up a feast. Portions vary widely, so asking the staff before ordering is safer than everyone choosing at random.

Location and dining notes:The address is 台北市大安區延吉街138巷2號, near the lane entrance between Yanji Street and the Zhongxiao East Road commercial area. Take the Bannan Line to Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Station; from Exit 2 it is about a 5-minute walk. It is also close from Zhongxiao Dunhua. Drivers mainly use paid lots around Zhongxiao East Road, Guangfu South Road, and Yanji Street. The lane is narrow, so park first and walk in—do not keep the whole table waiting while you circle a sixth time.
Important reminders:Some large dishes, including crispy chicken and grilled rib, require advance booking; confirm what you want when reserving. Popular slots can be booked one to two weeks ahead, though actual dates depend on the restaurant’s reply. Whether Lamb Paomo broth can be refilled, table time, payment methods, and daily availability may change, so ask again before ordering. This is a place for group sharing; smaller parties should show restraint. Northwestern generosity does not mean carrying every dish home.
● Lamb Paomo

Before Lamb Paomo reaches the table, guests receive a dry flatbread to tear by hand into small pieces, which returns to the kitchen with lamb broth and toppings. The smaller the pieces, the more readily they absorb broth. Once cooked, they retain a dumpling-like chew rather than turning mushy. The broth is easy to drink and the lamb aroma is clean; ask whether broth refills are available. Tearing takes longer than eating. Do not show off with coin-sized chunks, or you will have only yourself to blame when they stay dry inside.

● Grilled Rib

The restaurant often introduces grilled rib through a story that it was the fourth dish at Emperor Huizong of Song’s birthday banquet. The history adds drama, but texture is what matters: a crisp, fragrant exterior, tender meat within, and spices that go beyond the surface, giving more layers than an ordinary fried rib. It may require advance ordering, so ask when reserving. Do not arrive and stare longingly at the next table; they may not share.

● Northern Shaanxi Fish with Pickled Chilies

Northern Shaanxi Fish with Pickled Chilies gets tang, heat, and aroma from pickled-chili sauce. The large basin looks fierce, but the actual heat is restrained rather than pure burn. The fish remains tender after absorbing the sauce, and the chilies are edible too. Ask about that day’s preparation because everyone measures heat differently. My “mild” may already have the next table wiping sweat, so let us not pressure each other.

● Xinjiang Crispy Lamb Skewers

Xinjiang crispy lamb skewers have a fragrant crust while keeping juice and tenderness inside. Cumin is obvious, but salt is not doing all the work. The lamb aroma is clean enough for diners usually wary of it. At a large table they disappear quickly, so order by head count. Pair them with tea or another drink, or eat them between paomo and fish to move the table from soup and sauce to dry spice.

● Mongolian Fried Milk Tofu

Mongolian Fried Milk Tofu is a fitting finish after heavily spiced dishes. Its crisp fried shell is dusted with sugar, while the hot filling has milky aroma and a stretchy texture. Sweet, savory, and creamy at once, it is not a typical chilled dessert. Mind the heat when it arrives, and do not forget it until completely cold. After sour heat and cumin have taken turns, a warm piece lets the tongue clock out—even if my stomach is still working overtime.

💡 Ordering note

For a first visit, build the meal around Lamb Paomo, Northern Shaanxi Fish with Pickled Chilies, and lamb skewers; reserve grilled rib when booking and save Mongolian Fried Milk Tofu for last. With six or more people, sharing many dishes is easier. Smaller groups should ask about portions so every plate does not become a main character.

  • Location:台北市大安區延吉街138巷2號, from Exit 2 of Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Station it is about a 5-minute walk.
  • Type:Shaanxi and other northwestern regional dishes, lamb dishes, and shared group meals.
  • Highlights:Interactive hand-torn paomo, advance-order large dishes, cumin and hot-and-sour spices, and an antique frontier style.
  • Good for:Family gatherings, groups of friends sharing dishes, spice lovers, or anyone curious about less-common northwestern cooking.

📌 Editor’s wrap-up

What stays with you at 《秦味館》 is not one signature but a table where every dish has its own action and personality: tear the Lamb Paomo by hand, hear the old story behind grilled rib, open the appetite with hot-and-sour fish, pass the baton to cumin lamb skewers, then bring the flavors home with fried milk tofu. From Exit 2 of Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Station it is about a 5-minute walk. The real task is to reserve and ask about advance-order dishes first. I have done the homework; now bring enough people, not a whole table of guests who all say “anything is fine.”
