THE STORY

The story behind this place

From a Western herb restaurant to a Sichuan bistro

The space was originally The Villa, a Western herb restaurant. Because the owners loved Sichuan cuisine, they invited an experienced Sichuan chef to help transform the pairing of Western food and a bar into a contemporary Sichuan bistro. Regina, who had worked in luxury fashion, also brought her aesthetic background to the interiors and plating, placing peppery dishes in a setting that retains a Western wine-bar mood.

Beef in Green Sichuan Pepper Broth

Thin slices of beef rest in a numbing, spicy broth with a distinct fresh green-pepper aroma and tender meat. The focus is the way pepper fragrance and heat build on each other.

Boiled Fish

The fish is thick and tender while tofu absorbs the broth, bringing two soft textures together in a hot soup. It suits diners who want to savor both fish and broth.

Come on, let me tell you something.

Taipei keeps finding new ways to have fun. This is clearly Sichuan food, yet they had to turn it into a bistro and call it “Red Queen.” It sounds like a woman who works seriously by day, then kicks off her heels at night and fearlessly takes on the heat—personality to spare.紅皇后 川酒 • RED QUEEN BISTRO (Red Queen Bistro) visit photo

I finally squeezed in for a meal and could not help laughing. They have basically smuggled a Southeast Asian resort into central Taipei. A freestanding little villa, fish gliding through a lit pond, and a courtyard bursting with green: sitting outside in the breeze with spicy food feels like a stolen breath for city people.

I only want to talk about three dishes this time. Any more, and I’m afraid you’ll drool onto the keyboard.

First came theTingly Shredded Potatoes。紅皇后 川酒 • RED QUEEN BISTRO (Red Queen Bistro) visit photo
They crunch like a new acquaintance—polite on the surface, with a small temper hidden inside. Gentle tartness and numbness dance on the tongue, and when the plate is gone, you still want to poke around for one more bite.

Then cameBeef in Green Sichuan Pepper Broth。紅皇后 川酒 • RED QUEEN BISTRO (Red Queen Bistro) visit photo
That broth is like a suddenly flirtatious message from an ex: numbing, spicy, and dangerously habit-forming. The beef slices are just thin enough, and the green Sichuan pepper aroma goes straight to the head. I decided on the spot that this relationship deserves several more dates.

And the grand finale was, of course, the pot ofBoiled Fish。紅皇后 川酒 • RED QUEEN BISTRO (Red Queen Bistro) visit photo
The fish is thick and tender, as if saying, “Take your time, I’m right here.” The tofu soaks up the broth, and every ladleful feels like life giving you a fierce hug. We immediately decided to take a whole pot home and keep the romance going.

When I walked out, my head was still tingling. The clever part is not only the heat. In noisy Taipei, the restaurant gives you a small corner that feels both wild and comfortable.
